so my daughter is at the beach today, and dropped her fairly new digital camera in the sand. She said that the retractable lense is having a hard time opening and closing.Thinking of using compressed air to try to remove the sand, but read this may damage it further. Thinking that she is just screwed. Anyone ever fix this problem?

Take it to a camera shop and have them take a look at it. I would not take the risk of making it worse.

I agree. They have the tools and can probably open it up to get the sand out....
