So apparently an urban radio host declared to NYC that she was a racist and went on to say whenever she sees an interracial couple in the street that she hates them both, and she seems to think nothing of it.105.1 was the station.
'I made a confession of my own,' Mays said yesterday. 'I said I was concerned about interracial relationships when the African-American community has our own inner work and healing to do. If I see a white woman dating an African-American man, I feel, as do many African-American women, that there is one less black man available to us.' She claimed she was the victim of a 'climate of pins and needles' stemming from the firestorm over indecency following the Janet Jackson and Howard Stern controversies.'I wasn't speaking against anybody,' Mays said. 'I was just being honest. Unfortunately, the industry is under FCC scrutiny and the climate is ripe for reactionary measures.
Well my issue is why do people think that they can truly say whatever they want at any time? Do you think they should be able to, I mean some of us on here say things but we never got fired because of it? They are human too right? Do you think she should have gotten fired?

Ya but thats not the KKK thats just him trying to help people. Anyway.... Its kind of like when Lauryn Hill said she'd rather her children starve then have white people listen to her music. I don't buy her garbage... It su*ks cause I did like the fugees LOL
She didn't say it. It was an Urban Legend.
I thought so too, but it was just a nasty story that got around.
As a person who works in radio: It's the Company's perogative whether or not they fire her. Please, in radio people get fired because the station just doesn't want to renew their contracts! Or sometimes, the management doesn't want to play hip hop anymore and they switch formats and the person's voice doesn't work with the new format! It's a part of the business. I'm a supporter of Free Speech, 100%. What she said was ignorant, racist, and uninformed, but at least she didn't lie and say she WASN'T racist.

But doesn't this just go to show that this 'idea' of freesom of speech is a myth?

Hey PrincessRose, my fellow radio chick!
Here's a question ... Don't you think the media/public figures have certain responsibilities to the public? I believe in Freedom of Speech, I just think that there is a time, place and platform for everything! I think that you shouldn't be able to say anything anytime anywhere you want - you need to look at where you are and the implications it may cause. Otherwise I'd be cursing peole out left and right!

But putting restrictions on speech isn't freedom at all.

Jordan, you're making me think too much today LOL and you're going to get me to addicted by the end of the day too
The way I view it is there is a time and place for everything. They show @$$es on NYPD Blue becuase it's after 10 p.m., they wouldn't do that on My Wife & Kids at 8 p.m. because it's a family show and inappropriate. I don't think it's about Freedon of Speech as much as what audience is appropriate for what. If the DJ had an adult talk show and that was the topic of conversation for the day, then I don't think it would have been as inappropriate as a Saturday afternoon on a radio station which caters predominately to teenagers that might go 'YEAH, what she said' and will walk around now with this ignorant women's voice in their head now.
I believe in the Freedom of Speech and I also believe in having the right audience too. JMO

Don't you think when the constitution was written times were different, I mean Freedom of speech yes but we didn't have the methods of communication that we have now (which broadcasts alot further) so maybe that wouldn't have been a right if they knew how we would abuse it!

I think that it would still be a part of the constitution. They were coming from a place and time where if you said the ' wrong ' thing you were not just fired you were executed.
I also think that freedom of speech applies to everyone, but if you say it you better be ready for the consequences.

Re: DJ fired for being racist
I have to believe that our founding fathers would still have fought for freedom of speech. They were living in a time where they were not allowed to say anything that contradicted the King. I think that would have welcomed the medium that we have today to disseminate free speech with greater ease.
There are Supreme Court cases that limit free speech. For instance, you can't yell 'Fire' in a crowded movie theater just for fun. You can't stand on a soapbox and tell the people to take up arms against the government. You can't mouth off the your supervisors and hide behind free speech. The list goes on.
I think that we have enough limits and I am a little appalled at the movement to limit our freedom of speech.

OK but then you shouldn't be able to say I hate white people or any race same thing and hide behind freedom of speech.

We're all adults. There are consequences to everyone's actions. If you tell off your boss, you should know that there's a chance you'll get fired for insubordination. Same thing here.
I would LOVE to tell LOTS of people off, but I police myself because I know there will be consequences to my actions.
Sure, you can yell Fire in a crowded theater, but you should be punished for inciting a riot.

Why should you not be able to voice your opinon? I believe if more people were open about there feelings it might just open up a dialouge. How can we correct misconceptions without understanding thier source?

Actually, not only can you say that, there are cases that say you can pretty much walk up to anyone and say as many offense things as you want.
The interest found to limit speech in the examples I gave do not apply to merely offensive language. I don't think you can ever ban offensive language because there will always be people who are offended by something.

Re: DJ fired for being racist
I think the station has the right to fire her. Now thats' not saying the SHOULD have, but that have the right to. the advertisers are their customers & if they offend the advertisers, they will loose $.or if she offende lsiteners, ratigns would drop, and advertisers woudl pull out & they'd still loose $. If I offended customers, I could be fired.
She still has the freedom of speech. She could walk up & down her street saying she doesn't like inter-racial couples on her own, but when you are representing a company, you have to follow their rules or risk the consequences. She was a dj--it wasn't like she was being interviewed on her personal beliefs. She was hired to represent the image of the station & this obviously was not an image they want to project.
Its not like she said it in the office to someone, that would warrant a warning, but she said it on the air, to the general public.

Re: DJ fired for being racist
I don't think it's an issue of freedom of speech. She was free to say what she wanted, she didn't go to jail because of what she said. She was fired because the radio station didn't like it. The radio station has every right to approve/disapprove of what its DJ's say on the air.
