So apparently an urban radio host declared to NYC that she was a racist and went on to say whenever she sees an interracial couple in the street that she hates them both, and she seems to think nothing of it.105.1 was the station.
'I made a confession of my own,' Mays said yesterday. 'I said I was concerned about interracial relationships when the African-American community has our own inner work and healing to do. If I see a white woman dating an African-American man, I feel, as do many African-American women, that there is one less black man available to us.' She claimed she was the victim of a 'climate of pins and needles' stemming from the firestorm over indecency following the Janet Jackson and Howard Stern controversies.'I wasn't speaking against anybody,' Mays said. 'I was just being honest. Unfortunately, the industry is under FCC scrutiny and the climate is ripe for reactionary measures.
Well my issue is why do people think that they can truly say whatever they want at any time? Do you think they should be able to, I mean some of us on here say things but we never got fired because of it? They are human too right? Do you think she should have gotten fired?

But let's face it...We see a whole lot more of this everyday and nothing is done about it. WHen Jenny Jones, Jerry Springer, Dr. Phil have people including the KKK memebers on their shows talking a whole lotta c*%#. To me, that is really spreading hate! Why is it ok for them to do it ?
I havent seen the kkk on any of those shows in so long. Jerry is all crap anyway. I couldnt tell you the last time I watch that show.

I heard this live on the radio. I believe I was listening to 97.1 (my FH has the programed on his radio I usually listen to 105.1). Honestly it annoyed me. I thought she was an idiot. but.... she is entitled to her own opinion. It made me change the station and vow not to listen to her. I am white and I do like the station. It doesnt matter to me what color someone is and who the decide to marry. She is ignorant. I honestly couldnt believe what I was hearing.
ETA: she didnt just say she had something against inter racial couples. She came right out and said Im racist I don't Like white people.
Do you think she should have been fired? My point was that the station did have a right to fire her because listeners like you will stop tuning to the station. Just wondering what your thoughts as a listener are...

I don't think that she should have been fired as long as she was just expressing her opinion and not bashing anyone in particular. Now if the station wanted to punish her then they should have suspended her with a warning and made her apologize to the listeners if she offended anyone.
I think her comments unfortunately are representative of how many African-American women feel when AA men date women outside the race. As an AA woman, I don't give a rats arse if an AA man wants to date outside our race. It's not for me to hate or judge. But I have a lot of friends who b!tch and moan whenever they see an inter-racial couple together. And none of them can explain why it bothers them so much.

I was at the concert. I also love Pearl Jam and have been in love With Eddie Vedder since the came out. LOVE them.. Although I really didnt agree with this war and bush.... And you should be able to voice your opnions....he went a little off the deep end. But he also wrote a song bashing bush so...
Exactly.
He might have been 'influencing' 14/15/16 y/o's with his opinion...but what exactly can a 14/15/16 y/o do with that information? They can't vote. Hopefully by the time they turn 18, they will have formed their own opinion - whether it was influenced by a teacher or a singer or a politician - and use that when they vote. I honestly didn't see anything wrong with what he did ESPECIALLY when anyone who went to the show and followed Eddie for the past 10 years, should have known his views/opinions at that point. And if you had bought their last record, you'd have heard the Bush Leaguer song.
You don't agree - don't go, don't listen, don't buy. We all have that right, that choice.

I am assuming that If Dr. Phil or Jenny OR Jerry or even oprah said I have a problem with white people I hate them , they would be fired as well, There guests are the ones saying and spreading the message The Host should be the Mediator (sp) and unfortunatly in this case The Mediator (sp) was the offender.

Re: DJ fired for being racist
I dont know.. I think it's odd how we as a public are so fast to say what is and is not 'popular opinion' therefore safe or unsafe to say.
I feel like it's a bad case of animal farm. You're only allowed to say things that the majority agree.
Look I dont care how you feel about the issues, you should be able to express yourself. I have heard stupid racist stuff almost all my life. Im not Mexican. Im American Indian and Spainard. Yes, my best friend is Black, so what? oh and Yea, Im marrying a Chinese guy, who cares you're not sleeping with him. Still I think if you don't like it, say it. I don't care. It's your right as much as it is mine to say I disagree.
Just because it's become ok for interracial relationships doesnt mean everyone has to be happy about them. It's not been that long since it's become a real 'norm'. Hell even my father has his oddball racist (though he NEVER admits it) views. He made them very clear to me. I chose to ignore some of them and some of them I absorbed with a different angle.
Its ok to NOT like what you see. It SHOULD be ok to say that. Kids are influenced just by Radio and TV. Most racist kids hear it from their own homes. 'The white people are always out to get us' crap.
I think the BETTER way to handle this would have been to COUNTER her statement by making her admit on-air she should not have said it to this audience.
I know I am guilty of saying things VERY un-PC but only to my very closest friends and Jim (which means like 3 people) because I trust them and they know me well enough to understand me.
I do detest that if you disagree or find something unappealing you can no longer safely voice those opinions. The Layman has it easier but those in positions of invluence can never really say what it is they mean.
Just my thoughts on it. (I think they may have gotten twisted.. im trying to work and post! HAHAAH )

It is predisposing them , that is what is doing so what if they can't vote, you are tainting the minds of individuals who haven't even had a taste of real life yet.

I understand what you are saying. This was my first Pearl Jam concert - FH has been going to them for years, not me so he knew what Ediie Vedder does - and yes, I knew his views beforehand - I just didn't expect him to rant & rave like he did at the concert. I was very surprised and didn't enjoy the lecture when I paid to hear music. And I think the parents who bought these kids the tickets didn't know that either. I was surrounded by parents that were surprised like me.

He definitely ranted - too much red wine. I'm glad those young people were there with their parents - hopefully it sparked conversation and hopefully the young people will form their own opinion and not be swayed by anyone (parents included). Nothing chaps my arse more than an adult whose opinion is based solely on what their daddy rants about. But I digress.
Opinions are going to be expressed wherever you go. To say that what Eddie did was wrong - that he was influencing young people and therefore wrong - is politically one-sided. There were many people there who did agree with what Eddie was saying and would probably say that his influence on those young minds was good.

Ahhh, good point. I just feel parents & teachers should be influential on children and not some 'rock star' - maybe that's what bothers me - that's he's a rock star and not someone I think to be a good source of information. We can agree to disagree I guess

Jan05 I agree , I think parents should have an influence in there childrens life and not some rockstar who had to much red wine, Is it so bad that a parent would want to instill certain values or ideas in their child, but Ok for Rock Stars and movie stars to do it ? IMO I think parents should have some sort of influence

I agree...but i think that kids/teens don't really value thier parents advise as opposed to the idols they see on the tv. Even i never really truly appreciated the things my parents said till i was an adult...Now i sound just like my father sad actuall

Your right I rebelled against everything my parents ever said but I also never followed any superstar, I never really had an idol, I think if children teens whatever are impressionable I would rather be the annoying parent then have my kid being influenced by someone else.

Veronica, I totally agree with you. I didn't quote it because its so long!
This is a quote that I truly live by - 'I don't agree with what you're saying, but I'll fight to death to defend your right to say it.'
I don't like what that DJ said, but she lives in America where she has the right to say it. All of the radio stations are running scared because the Senate is about to vote on a bill that will absolutely change radio as we know.
And to whoever said that Howard Stern ignores the list of things that cannot be said is totally WRONG. That list consists of seven words and he does not say those words and if someone else says it, it is bleeped out and he yells at whoever said and (since it is almost always a caller) he hangs up on them.

I think she should be fired unless the radio station promotes racism. When on air, everything said reflects and represents the radio station. I relate it to when there is a infomercial on and the hosting station says, 'we have nothing to do with what you are about to see'.

It was 105.1 WWPR From the daily News ... 'Weekend jock Raqiyah Mays was fired yesterday by WWPR'
