DJ fired for being racist

DJ fired for being racist

So apparently an urban radio host declared to NYC that she was a racist and went on to say whenever she sees an interracial couple in the street that she hates them both, and she seems to think nothing of it.105.1 was the station.

'I made a confession of my own,' Mays said yesterday. 'I said I was concerned about interracial relationships when the African-American community has our own inner work and healing to do. If I see a white woman dating an African-American man, I feel, as do many African-American women, that there is one less black man available to us.' She claimed she was the victim of a 'climate of pins and needles' stemming from the firestorm over indecency following the Janet Jackson and Howard Stern controversies.'I wasn't speaking against anybody,' Mays said. 'I was just being honest. Unfortunately, the industry is under FCC scrutiny and the climate is ripe for reactionary measures.

Well my issue is why do people think that they can truly say whatever they want at any time? Do you think they should be able to, I mean some of us on here say things but we never got fired because of it? They are human too right? Do you think she should have gotten fired?

I'll bite.

I said no I dont think she should have been fired.

I think she's an idiot for thinking nothing would happen after saying such a thing, but losing your job?

Hell I've heard worse near the proverbal water cooler. Idiots caught are warned. Not fired straight out.

I think firing her sets a bad standard. You should be able to say what you want to say, it's our freedom, but understand it comes with a price, responsibility. Firing her outright says, we don't really care what you say just make sure it's friendly. Then what CAN we say? It's too much monitoring.

Do I think she was wrong, yes. I *AM* in an inter-racial relationship all be it not black and white. If I listened to her show I would have winced at hearing her broadcast it and expect the station to have immediate action. I'd think they'd make her apologize and note her file. Now if this was a repeat offender. Yeah, fire her.

That's just my thoughts based on what you've posted.

They feel that they have the freedom of speech...as per the constitution
Do i think anybody should be able to say what they want? ...i dunno
I do believe in freedon of speech but somethings are just ridiculous and are
just more destructive than productive (ex. when the KKK has their marches)
Do i think she should have been fired for that comment...no
But i also don't think that what she said was racist..prejudice yes but not
really racist

I think what she said was ignorant! Especially in this day & age. That being said they do have a list of guide lines that have to be kept when on the radio. (Howard Stern is the only one who doesn't seem to have them)

Radio stations are looking out for their audience. And if they got enough complaints about her they just might fire her. Was it wrong. I'd say yes! But, she should have thought before she spoke!!

I think the radio station did have a right to fire her. What she said is widely unpopular, and may cause the station to lose listeners. It's all about the ratings for them. Ratings = $$. Fines from the FCC = less money. It all comes down to the money.

I don't know which radio station this was but Infinity just came out with a guideline for their DJ's (including Howard Stern). I read it yesterday.
I'm not sure what we are debating, but I'll try here. First, I think this DJ is EXTREMELY ignorant in her views. In the year 2004, I'm surprised by her views to be honest.
Second, I don't think she should have been fired completely, but I do think she should have been repremanded in some way.
People in the public eye - actors, muscisians, DJ's, etc ... need to take responsibility about what they say. They have a power (unfortunately) to have thousands of people hear their voice and they need to THINK about the implications of their actions.
Was this woman DJ'ing a talk show? Was this the topic of converstation? Is it a time when impressional children/teenagers heard her? If you are going to be in the public eye than you need to be responsible.

Well said. I agree.

People say these things all the time on talk show radios...Just watched a
show on this topic on Dr. Phil last week...How come they can talk about this issue?

Personally, I think it's a different platform. Talk Show Radio or Talk Show TV, you know the topic before hand, mostly adults listen to talk radio - For a DJ to just come out and say that (if that's what happened, I don't know) then I think it's wrong. To me it's - who is her audience? Why was she talking about this? I thknk tat's the difference between where it's right & where it's wrong.

Personally i think she was just expressing an opinion..I think she shouldn't
have used the word 'hate'. That is what made the statement offensive

I think that yes talk radios shows do cater to the adult audience which i think
is much better forum to say adult topics (like this one)...
Unlike the tv talk shows where kids do watch! And can be influenced by
such cr*#.

I think people should be allowed to say whatever they like as long as it does not inflict harm upon other. However, if people chose to say/do whatever they like, they should not complain when there are consequences (i.e. loss of job, fines, etc.).

Itsn't that a contradiction...
Yes i believe in freedom of speech BUT you can be fired..deal?
Isn't these 'consequences ' contradictory to the 'hey you have the right
to say what you want' statement?

Not trying to be arguementative just don't understand

To get off on a tangent here. I love Pearl Jam's music ... since they came out I liked them. My FH used to follow him around the country and go to all the shows.
Last year, right after the war we went to their concert. In the middle of the concert Eddie Vedder goes off on the war, and Bush, and the government, etc, etc and I was sitting there thinking look at these 14/15/16 year olds ... they don't know the facts, they don't know the different sides, they are going to take this guys opinions as fact and use them as their own.
Whether or not I agree with Pearl Jam's views doesn't matter. I read the paper, watch CNN, listen to the radio, even debate it with friends, and know where I stand. These kids have no clue! And I think Eddie Vedder's in a position to have a HUGE influence on a lot of influential kids and I think it's wrong.
We went there to see a show, to watch him play music. We didn't go to a war protest!
It just really bothered me that this 'musician' thought he had the right to influence these children when it's only his opinion and his only!
Sorry to get off on a tangent, but my point is - as a person in the public light, you need to be responsible about what you say and do because you don't know who will take your word as GOD.

Firing her was a bit extreme, I think. What she said was some pretty serious stuff though. How could you 'HATE' someone you don't even know simply because they are involved in an inter-racial relationship? That is so close minded of her to say that. Everyone has an opinion, this is very true. But, if that opinion involves hate, then we don't need to hear it. There is enough negativity in this world, we don't need anymore!! It's amazing how some people just don't think before they speak. The best is that I heard she wants to have her own talk show!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

Maybe it is contradictory. My point is if I want to tell off my boss, I should be able to. However, when I get fired, (which is a natural consequence) I shouldn't complain.

Personally I think she was a wee bit extreme, anybody that blatantly promotes the fact that they hate people because of their race to me does not deserve any air time. Think of it this way does the KKK have a radio station no, Do Nazi's have a radio sation no so I don't feel she deserves to be on if she is going along the same lines as the other groups. Freedom of speech her rant is questionable. It was her opinion with no merit behind it.

Re: DJ fired for being racist

I heard this live on the radio. I believe I was listening to 97.1 (my FH has the programed on his radio I usually listen to 105.1). Honestly it annoyed me. I thought she was an idiot. but.... she is entitled to her own opinion. It made me change the station and vow not to listen to her. I am white and I do like the station. It doesnt matter to me what color someone is and who the decide to marry. She is ignorant. I honestly couldnt believe what I was hearing.

ETA: she didnt just say she had something against inter racial couples. She came right out and said Im racist I don't Like white people.

I was at the concert. I also love Pearl Jam and have been in love With Eddie Vedder since the came out. LOVE them.. Although I really didnt agree with this war and bush.... And you should be able to voice your opnions....he went a little off the deep end. But he also wrote a song bashing bush so...

Re: DJ fired for being racist

But let's face it...We see a whole lot more of this everyday and nothing is
done about it. WHen Jenny Jones, Jerry Springer, Dr. Phil have people
including the KKK memebers on their shows talking a whole lotta c*%#.
To me, that is really spreading hate! Why is it ok for them to do it ?
