DJ or Band??

DJ or Band??

I am really undecided about this. I always wanted a band from the start but after looking into the cost I'm not sure it's something we can afford. We've gone back on forth on this topic and have no idea what to do. I like how a DJ can play more modern music and stuff but honestly I find them to be really cheesey with all the colored lights and stuff. Maybe it's just been at the weddings I've seen but I feel like the DJ belongs at a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or sweet sixteen. I know tons of girls on here are using DJ's though. If I had the money hands down I would do the band. What do you think? There's really not much we can cut back on either to make up the difference

I would much rather the DJ, have you thought about adding the percussionist?

I had a DJ for my engagement party, therefore I prefer a band for the wedding.

Check out the band Soul Revival!!!! They are very affordable, more so than any band I looked at, and they are fantastic.

Soul Revival

You can get anywhere from a 3 pc jazz trio to a 9 pc band complete with a male and female singer and a 3 pc horn section! You can also get a 5 pc band with just a male singer, or just the female, whatever combo you want.

Good luck!

I am totally on the same page as you. I always thought I'd want a band but $6000, $7000 plus is too over the top for our budget. Plus, when I heard some of the good ones, they usually had one or two great singers but couldn't cover everything or rock songs well. We decided on FM Entertainment - Paulie is our MC. (People rave about them on this site) . What I liked is I went to see them and they totally did a demo of what it would be like that night and listen to what you want. I said no lights or mist or videos etc. I wanted class and elegance while letting people hear great music and have fun and that's what they said they will provide. We want everything from Sinatra to Springsteen to fun dance stuff later on and I think that's a great way to go. Good luck to you!

I went with the band. Since our parents are paying for the wedding FH and I are paying for the band. In my opinion, I think it is a bit classier but I'm sure you can find a DJ and tell them no lights, video montage, etc. I find that also to be for a bar/bat mitzvah or sweet sixteen.

It's all about having a really great time no matter which you choose.

we would have loved a band, but didn't have the money in the budget since we splurged on the hall...

we went with Dance Jock as our DJ, and they were fabulous. Nothing cheesy at all--we had the owner, Scott as our MC, and he totally understood that we wanted the wedding to be fun, but classy and not like a Sweet 16 type thing. We also added a live singer for an extra 500 bucks. She did about 5 songs, and people loved it! It helped add an extra dimension to the whole DJ thing.

good luck!

I had them at my wedding and they were amazing!! I also loved that they were affordable and we could decide how many musicians we wanted. I highly recommend them too

We had the same problem. We ended up going with a band. The band we chose is great and cheaper. We saw them live and loved them and I am very picky.
FM me if you need more info.

I couldn't agree with you more! We are going with a band. I'm not a fan of the lights, give aways etc. Just not my taste for our wedding.

A band looks classier, but I think a DJ is more fun for a young wedding. There are so many DJs out there who do not have lights, plasmas and etc. I met with DJs who only do weddings and even DJ in clubs so they 100% cater to adults. I can recommend a few that I know absolutely do not do this--they just play great music. I feel like it's harder to get a great band, there are a lot of bad ones out there.

I love DJs and am getting one so of course I'm going to say go for the DJ! Haha. But honestly, you can create packages with a DJ and tell them you don't want lights, smoke, giveaways, etc. In fact, it'd probably make your cost a lot less by cutting that stuff out. Also, you can mention to them how many times you find that DJs can be cheesy, try to say funny stuff getting people up to dance, talk too much, etc. Explain to them you're more laid back and don't want some of the silly stuff they do. This way they can give you someone who meets your needs.

I had a band for my first wedding and few people were dancing. I don't know if it was the guests or the band music or the band itself, but the floor was empty or light most of the night. It is hard to say though what caused that though because I know one of the band member's brother had a massive stroke shortly before ( I know because he was my ex's good friend) and I don't know if they were just not into it. Add a percussionist for a twist, they are reasonable and it looks really cool. We also are getting a saxophonist for the cocktail hour.

If money is no object... go with a Band!
It just seems more formal.
Most people are under the impression that wedding bands are like the 'Wedding SInger' but there are sooo many good bands out there that sound just like the radio.

We are using Paris and I highly recommend them!

Believe me if money was no object I would have an amazing band!! Thanks for all the advice I'm going to look into a few different things.

I like both!!! We had a DJ. I was also worried about cheesyness, but it depends on who you have as an MC. Best thing to do is meet with a bunch!! And really feel them out. And I was also worried about the lighting, but I felt my DJ company had better quality lighting than some others I had seen. And I told them to go minimal on the colors. Ithink as long as you are very specific about what you do and don't want, a DJ will be fine if you can't find a band you like and can afford.

ETA: we used Starlight Express and our MC was Vinny. I highly recommend them- I wrote about them in my review and there is a pic of our reception room where you can see the lighting.

Re: DJ or Band??

We went with a DJ because of cost issues, we wanted to hear songs in their 'natural' state (as on the radio), and because we don't have the room in the RH room to set up anything more than a 3-piece band. If you are afraid of flashing lights and childish stuff from a DJ, just talk to them. Our DJ is only bringing some basic lighting to make stuff more romantic in the room and none of the flashing lights, etc. that you might normally associate with a DJ. Since he has also worked with our caterer many times before, we have confidence that he will be able to transition stuff around the meal smoothly.

Oh, I should also add...

I have heard some really amazing bands at weddings... and some really bad ones. Make sure you listen to the band a lot before you book!
