Do presents mean as much when you pick them out yourself?

Do presents mean as much when you pick them out yourself?

I was just thinking about this...I never give DH specifics about what I want, because I love to see what he picks out for me. Part of why I love getting presents from him is seeing what he thinks I need or would enjoy. How does everyone else feel about it? I know maybe I would get the perfect gift if I told him exactly what to get me, but it would lose meaning for me...

To me, the best gifts are the little thoughtful ones that don't come for any occasion at all ---- little things to just make me smile. This includes a jar of pickles on his way home from work!

I definitely agree. DH's family always, always asks the giftee or tells the gifter what they want. It drives me nuts!!! In my opinion, it totally defeats the purpose of giving a gift in the first place!!!!

On the other hand, I am so bad at reacting to things...especially when I'm not thrilled with the gift. So, for gifts from his mother, I'm happy to tell her what I want. DH knows me well enough now that he's gotten much better at giving gifts and I like to see him use his imagination (we had some rough times in the beginning! )

OOoh, I love pickles!!!

He usually brings me home olives, though!!! Love them too...It's not like I don't eat enough REAL food, but I love my condiments!!!

DH is not always the best at getting me gifts. One year for my birthday he got me a bra for my car. Another year he got me a toaster (and something else too, but I was like, a TOASTER?).

So I send him e-mails sometimes when I'm bored and list things that would be good gifts to get me that I found online. He actually likes that idea so he doesn't have to stress over what to get. And I send him a bunch of ideas so that I eventually forget what I asked for. That way when he gets me one of the gifts that I picked, it's still a surprise!

I can relate Annie...my FH is like that. He's not the type to take hints or remember if we go shopping the things I go crazy over. Before Christmas or my birthday I kinda have to spell it out for him or else I tell him (not w/ money being tight) that I'd rather go away for the weekend or such.

We used to and still do i guess...Always go together to pick out our gifts to one another...We both really want to give a gift that each other wants...
So before i would have said that it didn't matter...

BUT My DH recently bought me a coach pocketbook that i really had been wanting for NO reason excpet to cheer me up.
I have to say i really LOVE that pocketbook more tham most of the gifts i have gotten....The thoughtfulness really makes a gift

AGAIN BUT...i do not think that this has to be done for EVERYTIME you give a gift...I think my DH is good at picking out gifts for me but he is a PAIN to buy for...So i'd rather know in advance....

I think it depends on the situation. If I have been drooling over something and someone buys it for me, I will love it because I love it and because the person was observant enough to know what I want.

If I send the person an e-mail with the item I like and he/she buys it, I will love it because I want it, but it won't be a surprise.

DH usually buys me things I show him I like, but yesterday we were in J. Crew and while I was so busy looking at suits, he picked out a pink and green and white striped shirt that I would have picked out anyway and he bought it for me!!

My ex bought me pants at Express (workout yoga-type pants) in a size XXL when I would be small! I was like whhaaaaatttttt? And he said he asked the salesperson what size to get, and she asked if his girlfriend was about her size (she was the XXL), and he felt bad saying no, much thinner!!!!!!!

It means so much to me when DH picks out my gifts on his own. Sometimes, it's not what I needed or what I wanted, but the fact that he puts so much thought into it makes them the greatest gifts in the world!

ahhhh, reminds me of the time FH went into Frederick's of Hollywood - he was so embarassed, he just grabbed something, bought it, and left quickly --- when he gave me the undies later that day, I opened the bag, and didn't know what to say....so I just apologized for not fitting into the XS that he bought!

I love when it's a surprise gift, but I am pretty difficult to surprise.

It's not as exciting when I pick my gifts out, but at the same time, I may never get those things otherwise.

I usually pick my presents unless he comes up with a trip to somewhere. I love the anticipation of waiting and hoping I'll really get the present I wanted. I would not like the surprise of getting something I didn't want or the fact that he would've wasted a chunk of money on it.

i also pick my presents and i think its the thought that someone even wants to buy you a present that really counts. my dh is clueless when it comes to picking out things for me. he usually gets me something kitchen related and thinks its romantic lol. so ill drop hints this way i get what i want and he is happy because i like it

I come from a family where, ever since I was 13, my present for chanukah or my birthday is a check. Don't get me wrong, I like the money, but I also appreciate the thoughtfulness that goes into a personal gift. DH has always picked out my gifts with absolutely NO input from me (though I drop hints out of habit from ex's, he never uses them ). So far, he's done GREAT. My last bday present was a diamond solitaire necklace... PRETTTTTTTTTTTTTTYYYY!!!

I'm with Shorty, I would rather just get really unexpected gifts but if we buy something for each other, we tell each other.
Is funny, because regardless of how long we have been married, I don't think that he remembers my sizes.
That's why we tell each other, although I know more about him. He has really bad memory.

LOL we both have notecards with each others sizes on it for that purpose!
