Do you consider yourself

Re: Do you consider yourself

Yes, I'm definitely materialistic to a point. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. There are some peices of clothing that are worth the investment - my mom calls them wardrobe staples - classic, well made pieces that can last for years and look good no matter what the trend of the season may be. I also believe in not buying cheap shoes - your feet need to be treated well!

I gues I'm a bit of a car snob too - just a little though. I don't drive a benz yet

Ok now that you all think I'm terrible!

I think if I could afford to be materialistic about certain things, then I might be... like shoes or clothes. But right now, I just can't afford to be so no, I'm not, and it really doesn't bother me that I can't afford to buy $300 jeans right now or $1000 designer handbags.

FH thinks I am crazy for having expensive taste,,,,but he always gets someting out of the deal..I never come home empty handed for him when I buy stuff for myself...

I was always a saver,,,so I allow myself a certain amount of play money..I could spend my play money for the week on a pair of jeans AND be TOTALLY fine with that!!!!!!!!!!

ETA: I have no problem buying something on sale..and I also LOVE TARGET (saying it the fancy way)

FH would say I am but I dont think so... I think it is just a balance of two cultures since he was not born in the States- we see things a little differntly..I like quality items- whether it is a name brand or not

I think I am another person who is part materialistic and part thrifty. I buy nice brand names, but ALWAYS on sale. The thought of going into J Crew or Ann Taylor and plunking down full price for something makes me shudder. I want the stuff, but am willing to wait to get it on sale.

As far as things that I am willing to buy no frills, it depends on the quality. I will buy handsoap and shaving gel from Target or Kmart but I tried their shampoos and it wasn't the same as Pantene. I tried their feminine hygiene products and had pads literally come apart (not a good thing!!!) You really do get what you pay for.

Oh yeah, I drove a 12 year old beat up car for a few years after college until I could buy my car and only bought my car because the bomber was beyond repair and unsafe. And even then, I bought a Jetta, not a Beemer!!

I guess I am. But, I will make exceptions if necessary

Re: Do you consider yourself

I would say that I'm a little materialistic, just because I won't wear clothes that I own that are 'out of style'.... but I DO own some things from Wal*Mart (like layering pieces - tanks, tees, and a whole bunch of bras and undies).

I shop in Target every once in a while, but my #1 stores of choice are TJ Maxx and Marshall's. I really like that I can buy $58-78 Express Editor pants for $14.99 at Marshall's!!!

I can't remember the last time I bought clothing at the mall that wasn't discounted in some way - be it a coupon or a sale.

As far as makeup and hair products, my sister works at Ulta, so I always scope out the circulars, and use a 20% off friends and family discount card. I stock up several times a year, and rarely have to 'run to the store' for anything. My sister tells me all the time that I am 'cheap' - but I really do hate spending money on myself.

I guess I would. I have always had really expensive taste but If I have to I will settle for something less, as long as it's good quality and doesn't look cheap. I would never buy anything from KMart or Walmart though, Target is the only exception to that rule!

I can be at times, but I really try to find ways to save money. I will shop at Ann Taylor, Bloomies, and Thrift Stores..(yep). We bought a few things for our home in the thrift stores, which were in the original boxes, etc. I shop at Coach, payless, target, walmart, talbots, if I like it I'll buy it. I'll spend more on traditional pieces, but less on trendy items. I wear estee lauder makeup, but will buy a cheap lip liner in walgreens for 99cents...and I love Egglands Best Eggs vs. the regular egss that are maybe $2 cheaper than egglands best (not sure on teh $$$).

same here for clothes. as far as labels go, there are some things that I will be willing to spend a few bucks on....a good handbag...a good pair of shoes....accessories.

I think I am more on the non-materialistic side. I have a few high end things, but not many. I will shop anywhere and buy things on sale.

I guess I am when it comes to certain things.

I do hate Walmart, only because it is always a clusterfart to get in and out of.

Re: Do you consider yourself

I used to be, somewhat .. before I was married

When I was single it was easier to justify buying a new wardrobe all the time and top quality clothes/bags/shoes...

But now my priorities are SO different and we have such differnet goals, that what I wear is the least of my concerns

One thing I don't let 'slide' is my hair .. I still splurge for my hair cut / color / highlight.. to me that is more important than wearing designer clothes , etc

Re: Do you consider yourself

I don’t know if I consider myself materialistic just for the fact that I will walk into any store that has an item that catches my eye…I have no qualms about buying a top or skirt at Target if its cute…plus why pay so much money for something that you know is only going to be in for five minutes…I can buy it at a fraction of the cost at these other stores, wear it…get complimented on it and then throw it away without feeling guilty that I spent tons of money on something that I can’t wear next season…
Don’t get me wrong though…there are certain things that I just won’t buy if it isn’t a certain name brand…like juicy sweats…although I will buy other sweats if they fit nice and Seven jeans, to me no other pair of jeans fits like them. I look at it in that if I have to spend $80 for a pair of Express jeans, I’d rather cough up the $60 difference for a pair of Sevens bc I know that they fit better, and I prefer the look of them more than the Express ones. For me the Express jeans don’t fit right, they hang in the wrong places… I don’t get to buy them as often as I’d like because I have other priorities in life that I need to be looking into saving for…like buying a house, but once in awhile I love splurging

I don't think that I am, I really don't care about a brand name but stuff that will look good on me.

Re: Do you consider yourself

don't really think so, but my mother in law would tell you different. She thinks I'm a spoiled princess.

Which is funny because I really barely have any clothes at all.

This is a recent example, Fh mentioned to FMIL that I want a Louis Vuitton bag and she said 'everyone I know carries a fake. everyone know they're fake, and they don't care'

And Fh said 'Marymoon wouldn't be caught dead carrying a fake' and he was absolutely right. I'd rather not have it at all than have a knockoff, which means I usually don't get it at all. But I'm really a jeans and t shirt kind of girl, always have been.

I'm sure there are a few things I'm a brand whore about tho..oh I HAVE to have victoria's secret bras, I LOVE Ralph lauren but own almost nothing from RL, and I absolutely LOVE Lenox. i'm a big collector, especially of the disney classics pieces. I have a growing collection of mostly Snow White pieces. So yeah I gues sin the collecting sense more than the clothing sense..oh another example is we were at fortunoff and rying to pick china and the lady wanted to show me waterford's less expensive line and I was like 'ew'. I'd rather not have crystal.

Re: Do you consider yourself

Similar to what Felicia said- I would love to buy expensive things but would rather save money to spend on DH and I or on something for our house. In the past few years, I've been buying for quality, not quantity - I'd rather a nice shirt from JCrew that will last a few years vs. 3 shirts that are from somewhere else that will fall apart or be outdated after one season. I've bought clothes from Targey and have no problem not wearing brand name jeans, etc., but of course if we were rich I probably would buy more & nicer things. Not sure if that makes me materialistic or not?

I am but I am trying hard not to be. It is a huge waste of money, especially when saving for a house.
