Do you feel like NY weddings are totally diff. than elsewhere?

Do you feel like NY weddings are totally diff. than elsewhere?

I've been on boards before, and felt totally out of place (not like here-thanks liweddings!).

Part of it I think is geography, there I'd be interacting with girls having weddings down south or even places like Maryland, and it felt like their weddings were totally different.

Even my family who is only 7 hours away (upstate) thinks some of the things we're doing are nuts (they don't usually have open bar for more than the cocktail hour, and everybody puts the menu items in the invite and people have to choose in advance!). We have friends coming from Texas who don't feel comfortable giving cash, they just don't do that down there. Thankfully we registered for our honeymoon:) (not that the gift is important of course)

Has anyone else had this experience? What other things are done differently elsewhere? Are there any other boards besides here with a lot of NYC/LI brides?

FH's Cousin just got married in Pennsylvania and she sent the meal choices and you had to check beef or chicken. I felt like it was some warped 50s invitation. I thought they only did that in movies, or on the beef commercial!

Groovy-

My fam. thinks we're nuts, or millionares! They can't even fathom an open bar for 5 hours, the amount of food we're having or the idea of having a waiter take your order. When I mentioned making menus my mom said 'you just live diff. down there I guess'!!

I feel like my wedding is on Mars or something!

I know! NY is different by far... even though it's more money here than other places, I think it's worth it. They say you get what you pay for! If I have a daughter in the future I want her to get married in NY, there's just no comparison! Hooray for the proud LI brides!!

living in Rhode ISland, and working with a girl who is getting married out here---it is totally different...she is not having an open bar....I think its maybe 30 a plate for food...and I think the grocery store (stop & shop) is doing her flowers...her whole thing I think might cost 6,000 total...but then again she is a pathological liar, so I am sure lots that she tells me is not true..she is saying she is ahving fish and chicken and roasted potatoes and asparagus...and wedding cake, made by the grocery store too....I was like..HUH?? The best price I got was like $50 a head, BEFORE taxes..including the open bar...and Mine will be much much much more classy!! Definitely!!! We know how to have parties and weddings out in NY!!

where alot of my family is near Pitt, they usually just have a ceremony and have a reception in the church hall or a restaurant. They'll probably be floored when they see our wedding!!
Did you see Everybody loves Raymond? thats how most weddings are outside of NY (not counting big cities)

FH's cousin is getting married in September. The reception is upstate near Cortland in a Holiday Inn. They are having 2 kegs and punch. No soda. No open bar!!! The dinner is $35PP!

I tell FH's cousins fiancee all the things Im doing and she can't believe it.

FMIL said that my wedding is going to be one of the most extravagant things she's ever been to!!

Things are SOO different here!

My our honeymoon we meet two couples who are from FL. One couple paid $19.00 a plate (buffet style) and brought kegs of beer in themsleves. The other couple paid $30.00 a plate (sit down).
My friend went to a wedding in Arizona and the band stopped after EVERY song to take a break.

A distant cousing of FH had a wedding in N. Carolina. They didn't have food...the set out bowls with peanuts and pretzels and had punch! (We didn't go to this, heard through the grapevine). No wonder people from other areas always give smaller gifts! They couldn't fathom what we are spending!

absolutely, I went to a wedding that I thought was going to be fancy shmancy in CT...it had no a/c (in August...), no windows opened, and kegs...and food that went bad from the heat.

NY is definately unique with their weddings In my opinion.

I just got an invite to a wedding in Albany and we had to put our menu choices in the response too.

I'm a CA bride and from my observations..

-Weddings cost a lot more in NY, the per head cost is a lot higher there

-people just DO more .. maybe cuz it's expected. people are less likely to spend $$$ on huge centerpieces anywhere else but NY

ok theres more ive noticed that i dont remember right now hehe.

Yes! I agree. One of my friends is getting married in Rochester in an old manor house. They are only having wine and soft drinks. They are having a buffet. There is no seating chart, no dancing, no limos. It is just going to be an afternoon garden party. She is doing it for under $10K

I went to a wedding in the Bear Mt area where the MOB was practically auctioning off her daughter for the 'dollar dance'. Come to think of it, I've only seen the 'dollar dance' at Upstate weddings.

To answer your question...yes, I do. Outside of the LI/NYC area, the weddings are totally different. I guess that's why the 'average wedding' costs $22k - all the weddings outside of the Metro area even out the $30-100k weddings NY weddings.

It actually makes me a likttle sick...but I'll get over it - I *love* to throw a good party!

Absolutely!!! I think I posted this before, but I was a bridesmaid at my friend's wedding in Alabama last summer...it lasted all of 3 hours from the time they walked down the aisle at the church to the time she and her hubby changed into their 'traveling clothes' and left the reception for the honeymoon. There was no music, no dancing, no booze, and almost no food (just a few veggies with dip, some crab dip, and finger sandwiches...but TWO cakes, a bride's cake AND a groom's cake!!). I am going to have to warn her and all my other non-NY guests that the cocktail hour at my wedding is NOT the actual meal.

Edited to say: Oh yeah, and it cost her just under $10/head. No joke.

Im a NYer now, but a Texan at Heart! I must say NY weddings are diffently different than Texan Weddings! YOu're right! In Texas, you get what you are registered for... not cash or checks. So you better register for nice things down there! Also, Expensive in Tx is $40 pp. But, most weddings do not have an open bar and cocktail Hour. I told my FH that my extended family are not used to giving money as a wedding gift usually they give what we are registered for. I wanted to forewarn him to forewarn his family so they don't think my family is cheap! LOL I considered having a Texas Wedding but, I want to show off how NYers have weddings!!! LOL

NY weddings are totally different than those anywhere else - they're more bigger, more extravagant, and defintiely more expensive. Then again, everything is more expensive when you live here, so it's to be expected. I wonder if people in other areas have a less stressful time planning their weddings....
