I know several people who do. Actually, one of them was recently audited and is having his wages garnished. It is kinda funny. He is an actor and it's first really good paying job he has had in years, a national commercial, and he is not seeing a dime of his checks. I think it all catches up eventually.

yeah, my upstairs neighbors - who I've appropriately nicknamed: 'the animals' - because thats how they live!! She is on welfare, AND does NOT report her daughters income (she lives there)- and get this, the daughter is a COP! talk about scamming the system!

Re: Do you have a friend that scams the system?
I go through this all of the time. I work at a Catholic High School and of course, all most all of the students cry poverty. What angers me the most is that come Financial Aid time for College, all the truth comes out about the finances. I have families that own homes in their native countries (nice ones I might add) and are on welfare. Or better yet, the student that admitted that her father was a drug dealer and not married to her mother so that she could collect food stamps! This makes me RED!!!!

I have a cousin that does this. Her DH works off the books. She stays home with their kids and collects welfare. She owned a house way before I did and her kids are always dressed in designer clothes. Unbelievable!

No I don't know anyone personally. But when I went to College there were a BUNCH of people like that who were ALWAYS dressed in designer clothes. And the worst...they were on welfare AND they were being paid to go to school They had literally everything paid for incl. transportation And me who applied for financial aid would never get any and my mom's income was not that high

that pissed me off as well...there was a girl who had school paid for...always had nice clothes and was in a sorority...so tax payers were paying for sorority dues!!!
meanwhile I got nothing...and my parents were not wealthy at all....

As my students say 'Miss, you got to know how to play the system that is the only way to get ahead' However, I am always curious to those that 'play' how often do they get caught?

My mom works in a school where most of the kid's parents are on welfare and all qualify for free lunch and breakfast, yet funny how so many manage to have designer clothes and the newest, most expensive sneakers......

Re: Do you have a friend that scams the system?
I would seriously report anyone I knew who was doing this. I would call the IRS, the Dept. of Human Services, whoever.
Not to get too high on my horse, but both of my grandfathers and one grandmother served in WW2, one uncle in Vietnam who is now in Iraq, one aunt in Korea, one uncle in Beirut (during peacetime). When my grandmother was a baby her mother used EMPTY CEMENT BAGS from the GOWANUS CANAL construction as diapers. They were so poor.
What is my point? I am digressing! Oh, that I get really crazy b/c my family has served the US and gotten through some very difficult times financially and they would never imagine 'cheating the system'. We need 'a system' but one of the reasons it doesn't work is because of the cheaters. UGH!

Re: Do you have a friend that scams the system?
I HAD a friend that was like this. SHe ahd two children with 2 different fathers, had given another child up for adoption, and when she had her second kid, he was born premature, she claimed she didn't know she was PG, and two weeks before was at a friedn's wedding, drinking excessivly!!! I am sure that the hospital were enormous, and we as taxpayers ahd to pay for it!!! She would not get a job on the books, since the first kids father didn't have a steady income, and they had to pay back the money they got in excess of the food stamps. And if the father didn't repay she would have to. Once he did get a job on the books, she did get one to, but I know she gets assistance from the gov't for rent. It disquests me, I am so sick of working and paying for these sub humans that just milk the system. I see nothing wrong with really needing support, but use it as a way to get yourself back on your feet, not as a way to make extra money!!
