Do you have to block off rooms or can you just give hotel suggestions?
I am noticing that the webrate for hotels is better than the group rate they are giving me...

You can give suggestions. Just don't give too many suggestions because people like to stay together.

You don't HAVE to...depending on the time of year though, hotels can be full...due to weddings, vacations and business reasons [seminars, expos, etc...]. that is the real reason people block rooms.

Good point!!! People will wait til the last minute, then contact you asking what they can do because there are no more rooms. You don't want that stress. If people choose to go online and make their reservations, then let them. Also, try to negotiate with the hotels. I got both my hotels to come down $20 when I talked with them.

It is better to block rooms if you have a lot of oot guests...also if you have a wedding ina popular month you want to go a head and block them b/c they'll get booked up. Alot of my guests who didn't use the rooms I blocked can't find a room for my october wedding....

Re: Do you have to book rooms?
i was thinking of just doing hotel suggestions
btw. my parents, FILs, myself and FH - we cant think of a single person who would want to book a room - we have very few OOT people (maybe 2-3 families) and they will be staying with family. . .
Also since i am not doing STDs they would most likely find out about the rooms too late ( they release the rooms a month before and you usually send out invites not too long before that)
also i am getting married in january - not around any holidays
