I used to work in Far Rockaway... not the place you want to raise your children. There was just a drive by shooting the other night and a girl was killed. The schools is in the Far Rockaway area are really overcrowded. The only part of the Rockaways I would recommend would be the Roxbury/Breezy Pt. area (high # streets). Any other questions please feel free to FM me.

if you want to move there you should look in rockaway park or belle harbor or neponsit B120 and up but it is pricey also you can fm me with more specific questions my sister in law lives there and i will be moving there eventually
also i just remembered they are building up the area around B90 or so, a fireman friend just bought a place over there but it won't be ready for another year, but it is a lot more reasonably priced, and lots of fireman,and teachers moving in

Agree completely w/you hollie...its a scary neighborhood-when you get to the higher # streets-its a lot nicer but also $$$$$

We are considering buying the two family homes right on the beach there. We are not planning on having children for a while and they wont be school aged for a while so it was worth considering. Anyone know of THESE DEVELOPMENTS ON THE BEACH

fh and i looked at Arverne because we were told by FFIL who works for the housing preservation department that they were supposed to be zoned for affordable housing but that was a joke. They are really beautiful houses but the ones that they had for sale when we went werent even finished being built yet and were going for 750,000+ The original ones that they sold in the first installment were in the 250-300k range but not anymore. We also looked at the condo's they have but found that the area isnt finished being developed and we would be living in a construction zone for a long time. It might have changed some since then but just wanted to give a heads up in case you havent been there yet or it hasnt.

i'm a police officer assigned to far rockaway. take my sincere advice when i say, moving to far rockaway is not even close to the best idea. it is one of the worst areas in queens. one of the most dangerous... and the apartment buildings would make anyone want to throw up (urine in elevators, feces on stairs, roaches everywhere). we get NUMEROUS shots fired calls every night, stabbings and homicides are routine there. most of the apartment buildings are housing projects and they are gang-infested. some of the newer houses going up there are nice, but the area is not. it's not worth it. trust me. i don't make much but you couldn't pay me enough to walk the streets there without my gun. and i would never raise a child there. sorry!!

I grew up in Breezy Point, went to school in Far Rockaway and my mother worked at Peninsula Hospital which is in the heart of Far Rockaway. I would DEFINITELY NOT move to Far Rockaway - even if you are not planning on having kids, it is still such an unsafe area. There are apartment complexes in the higher number areas (I think 139th Street) which is a much nicer area. Breezy Point is also a great beach community - and MUCH safer. Good luck!

I live in Rockaway Park & I def. would not reccommend it to anyone who has to commute towards the city. It's a horribly long commute. My Fiance is a teacher--who teaches in East NY (not a great neighborhood)--but brand new school. He really likes it & it's a short commute for him--About 25 min. There's really not much in Rockaway & you have to go over a toll bridge to get most everywhere. I personnally don't like it. But some people love it. Feel free to FM me if you want any specific info.

i teach in the same region as far rockaway... its not the best area in terms of academic achievement. there are some really nice areas very close by. i was told that if i was going down there for scoring or anything to park in howard beach and take the bus across the bridge! also, my friend was a cop down there...its hit or miss.
