Do you love your e-ring? Did you have anything to do with picking it out?
Original post by Kim921
I LOVE my e-ring, very me! It is a 3 carat round solitare set in platnium. FH was right on target with no help from me.
Curious to know if you ladies had anything to do with your FI's choice or if it was all on his shoulders.....

I went shopping with my then boyfriend and we looked at tons of rings. I'm not a huuuuge fan of jewelry; just because I'm not careful with it, I lose it, whatever.
Anyway, the whole engagement thing was sort of a surprise to begin with. So we went window shopping. We had to have looked at a million rings and nothing fit both or budget or my taste. We had just about given up when we came across 'the ring' for me. It's a carat round center diamond, criss-cross gold bands as the setting with round diamond inserts. It's a short enough setting that I don't damage it too badly (although I've knocked the stone out twice from the crown). It suits me perfect and he didn't spend more than he could afford. I know some poor soul that's STILL paying off his girlfriends engagement ring and they got engaged in 1999! With that kind of expense, I'd rather have a car!

Nothing wrong with your question in my eyes. I do think people would say if they didn't love their e-ring, it doesn't mean they don't love their FH or H. I know people, my sister being one of them, that do not like their e-ring at all and are very open about it. However, I am one of the lucky ones, I am head over heels in love with my E-ring. And yes, I did have something to do with it, I made it clear that I loved ovals and platinum. He figured the rest out!

I absolutely LOVE my ring but unfortunately FH really didn't have much input other than paying for it. I picked out both setting (custom made 'antique' look) and the stone FH has very good taste in jewelry, however, he doesn't know a thing about picking out good diamonds so I coudn't trust him with that

Sage: I used the coat as an example of how you can be of two minds about something.
Most of my friends picked out their own engagement ring because they want to get EXACTLY what they want. In fact, im shocked that there are so few girls on this board that didnt do the same. ( I thought I was one of the last true surprise proposals around ) Since my proposal was a complete surprise I had no input (nor would I have wanted any as being a surprise was a good thing for me) - i would rather risk having a ring I didnt love the look of than pick one out for myself.
The girls that I know who really hate it have mostly switched it. I dont know how they broached it with their DHs but considering its something they wear everyday, i dont blame them a bit. The one girl that did not switch never wore her engagment ring after the wedding.
The girls that just dont love it...have issues about it. They dont want to say anything but they dont look at it with starry eyes like the girls that do love their ring do. And that seems a lot sadder than having an uncomfortable conversation with their husbands.
All i can say that i wear my ering every single day and im very glad he picked out something so suited to my tastes and my lifestyle. I dont know how I would have felt if he picked out something aweful.

I picked my own e-ring out.. DH bought it for me. I wasn't proposed to by surprise either... and I didn't want to be. The decision to get married is a mutual decision and I think the man asking the woman- as if it's his sole decision, is slightly antiquated. We just one day agreed to get married and that was that!
(not to say you ladies with the surprises is bad... it's just that's how DH and I do things- we ALWAYS talk everything through)

My proposal was a complete surprise. I had no idea what so ever it was coming. I had hinted at what rings I wanted for so long.
In the end, the ring was nothing as I had wanted or hinted at, and I can honestly say I LOVE my ring though. It's very special to me - it belonged to my hubby's grandmother whom I didn't get the chance to meet, and I've heard many wonderful stories about her.
It's the perfect size, color, cut and clarity.
The only thing I was 'concerned' about was that it was set in white gold. I ended up getting a platinum wedding band adn thought they look different next to each other. But they don't so I am happy!

I love my e-ring. I was completely shocked by the proposal and the ring. I had no input! Honestly, if he did ask me I would have told him to spend much less and get a smaller diamond. Actually I joke now and tell him lets just cash in and get a cz
Anyway, I have a friend who told her now fiance that the diamond MUST be at least 1.5 ct. She actually told him 'If you love me you'll get me a 2 ct'. What nerve! IMO.

Can't say too much that I'm not officially engaged, but after initially saying he was going to do it all himself, he changed his mind and we looked together. He would have ended up with a channel set ring which would have been fine (EXCEPT that is how my first ring was...first time around...SHHHH!)
We chose the band in platinum with baguettes (round & square) and a matching wedding band and all I can do now is WAIT!!! URRRRRRR (still waitin')

He picked it out all on his own.. then he had them modify it so it's not 'ordinary' or something you can just pick up.
Do I love it... ? Yes.!!! and sorta no.. I LOVE this ring.. its gorgeous. I never cared about size or clarity. If it sparkles and is bright and is my style shape.. i was going to be happy. I have a marquise with two pare shaped baggets set off to the side of the main 'mounted' stone, per se. It's hard to describe. None of the stones or their prongs touch eachother.
The ring is VERY high set.. and the prongs make it hard to find a matching ring for the wedding.. there's the hitch for me. Otherwise.. I couldnt care less if it were .25 carats on a pewter band!!
Re: Do you love your e-ring? Did you have anything to do with picking it out?
I kept leaving hints for what I wanted a marquise with 2 sapphires next to it. I got something completly different!
The proposal and ring were a complete surprise! FH designed my ring round with 2 pear shaped diamonds next to it. In white gold.
I love it I get soooo many compliments on my ring from complete strangers. I'm always so proud to say that FH designed it! I also love my future in-laws! I feel very lucky to have them for in-laws.
edited:Veronica I have a high setting as well what kind of wedding band did you pick out. Its very hard to match something up to my e-ring.

I was just off searching for a photo of it. Imagine a gold band.. spaced through the band are diamonds.. not set IN the gold.. but held BY the gold.. so if you're looking from the inside out, you see the diamonds clearly. I'll TRY to find a pic.

I was completely suprised, and therefore had nothing to do with picking out the ring. All things considered, he did a very good job.
That said, it is not the ring I would've picked for myself. But it came from him, and he loves me, and that's good enough for me
PS., No problem with the in-laws (yet).

ABOSLUTELY LOVE mine. I always told DH that I wanted a SOLITAIRE and he picked this one allll on his own and surprised me. its not too much and its not too little.
Re: Do you love your e-ring? Did you have anything to do with picking it out?
I ABSOLUTELY love my e-ring. We had gone ring shopping and I narrowed it down to 3 that I liked, he took it from there and I couldn't be happier

I guess I'm in the minority. The proposal and ring were a complete surprise. Whenever I would show DH a picture of a ring he never payed attention. He picked out a ring that fit me best. I round solitare, platimum band. I absolutley love it. It's such a classic cut.
I would never change my ring no matter what the size or type of cut, clarity,or what i loooked like. My husband did everything on his own and just knowing that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me means more to me than a ring.

Re: Do you love your e-ring? Did you have anything to do with picking it out?
I love my setting. FH and I looked and tried some on and he agreed that the setting suited my personality. He then ordered it and a stone and the proposal was not a surprise but not something that I expected that day.
I also share Sonistef's feeling that while I love my 1.01 carat ring, I would have liked it to be a little bigger. Unfortunately the setting I fell in love with is a Scott Kay Platinum setting (I like the setting, the designer wasn't that important) and so it was expensive. I don't think FH wanted the hassle of having a setting made to look like the Scott Kay, so he plunked down the cash on the setting and sacrificed a little on the stone. He admits he wanted to go bigger, but couldn't afford to do it with the setting he bought.
Overall, I love my ring. But more than my e-ring, I love the fact that when FH proposed, he did it by serving me dinner on two place settings of the fine china I adore. He showed me with dishes that we have a future!
Sorry I went off on a tangent

I love my ring also but then DH and I went to the jewelry store so he can get an idea of what I liked.
I think I would have told him if I didn't like it - I think it would break his heart to think I didn't, especially after spending so much money on it.
