......that a good friend used for her kids? It looks like brand new condition. We will buy a new mattress and sheets and everything else new. I read in a baby book that you shouldn't do that because something could be wrong with it & make it unsafe. Opinions on this please.

Sue we did As long as the crib is recently manufactured you should not have a problem. Just check to make sure the crib is in good condition.
IE a crib made long ago may have bars that are wide enough for the baby's head to fit throught therefore making the crib a danger.

We saw the crib. It looks brand new. I'm not sure how new it is but they kept it in excellent shape. If we can buy furniture to match the same type of wood, then we'll be set.

If you can fit a soda can through the bars then it's too old, and cannot be used.

just make sure that the bars are close enough together - otherwise i am sure it's fine.
