Do you think this is tacky?

Original post by Future Mulligan

FMIL told me that when FH's aunt finds out where people are getting married she calls up the RH and pretends she is interested in getting married there to try and find out about how much the couple paid and then she gives only as much as the RH says it would cost.......

I was a little annoyed by that.....I rather get less money as a gift than have her trying to find out how much money we paid - I think its rude.....especially that I know she is the type of person that will tell all of FH's other relatives that she found out how much we are paying and then tell them whatever the RH said......

i've heard of this, but normally it falls under the nontacky umbrella, when its a person that doesn't want to give too little (financial constraints) and wants to at least cover their plate and are oblivious to the pricing of halls~~~if the case is the person has money & shouldn't even worry about it, then yes, tackyyyy~

It's gross - but that's not the first time i've heard of that.

I can go one better... A close friend of mine has In-laws that work this way:

Go to the wedding with an open envelope with $300 CASH in it. Eat the cocktail hour, food's good, money stays - don't like the food - take out a $20.00.

Go to the reception, like the food, music, centerpieces, leave the money alone...don't like it, take out more money.

Bride & Groom don't come over and thank you personally for coming....big money comes out.

Cake is the last straw...like it, seal the envelope. Don't like it - remove even more.

She said if she didn't see them do it - she never would've believed that it happens...

wow that is crazy!!!

i will be totally honest - when i go to an event for someone i am very close to - sister, close friends, nephew etc. we give as much as we can afford and maybe cut corners that month so we can give more......when it is a family member we don't see that often, or a person we aren't that close with than we try to give an appropriate gift but don't give extra........

but taking $ out during the party that is crazy!!!!!!!

iT IS tacky and on top of that will probably not get accurate information...what if the couple added an extra or a couple extra's, it can add a decent amount to the price per person.

i know a lot of old italian people that do this LOL it is a known thing in my family ( not that anyone in my immediate family does it)

but we will make jokes at weddings like if there is a little mixup like our name is spelled wrong 'oh Zia XXX would SO be taking $5 out of the envelope right now'

edited to take out the LIKEs wow i type exactly how i speak!!

i just feel like all of these things take the thoughtfulness out of the gift.......

at least you girls don't think i'm nuts for thinking its rude and tacky

and why would she tell people that she does this! at least keep it a secret!! thats how i know she will tell all of the family - b/c she finds out and then spreads the word!!

When it gets closer, I'd make a comment.

Something like.... 'I was talking to my BM, and they told me that people call all the time to find out the price per head, and they're just calling because they're going to a wedding, and want to know how much to give. Isn't that weird? Plus, we're paying extra per head, because we added extra things to the reception.... ours came out to $50 extra per person!'

wow that is defiantly very tacky! I can't even imagine doing something like this. I've had soo many people already ask me how much it is per plate, and I don't even know what to say..

very tacky...

Re: Do you think this is tacky?

FMIL already asked us what she should tell people when they ask her how much we paid. I wanted to say why don't you tell them to mind their business!!!

I don't know why FH's family is like this?!?!?!?!?

I wish we didn't tell FMIL how much the RH cost us because I think she has big mouth (contrary to what FH thinks) and who knows what she'll tell people when they ask!

Live and Learn I guess

Re: Do you think this is tacky?

thats so weird, and yes tacky. her present should be based on the fact that YOU GOT MARRIED, not how much the RH was!!!

Re: Do you think this is tacky?

LOL This is only funny if the aunt is elderly. Otherwise, its rude and tacky. But theres something hysterical about a 75 year old woman calling up saying she's getting married and wants prices...
