FMIL told me that when FH's aunt finds out where people are getting married she calls up the RH and pretends she is interested in getting married there to try and find out about how much the couple paid and then she gives only as much as the RH says it would cost.......
I was a little annoyed by that.....I rather get less money as a gift than have her trying to find out how much money we paid - I think its rude.....especially that I know she is the type of person that will tell all of FH's other relatives that she found out how much we are paying and then tell them whatever the RH said......

LOL This is only funny if the aunt is elderly. Otherwise, its rude and tacky. But theres something hysterical about a 75 year old woman calling up saying she's getting married and wants prices...
OMG that would be funny - unfortunately she is not 75! lol

JT gave us prices over the phone.....so they will probably give them to her too...but I did have to ask to speak with a BM, but I am sure she will know to do this since this is her 'thing'.......

OMG...thats horrible. Who would even think of doing this. And just because they give her a price doesnt mean thats what you paid. Some people really are messed up...

Re: Do you think this is tacky?
WOW. Very tacky. The whole point of going to a wedding and giving a gift is the celebrate the union of two people you care about, not to cover your plate or simply give the couple some money. The point is the celebrating.
Which makes Jess' story so much worse!!!!! It's like those people are there just for the food and entertainment, not for the love of the couple!!!!
God I hope there is no one at my wedding who does this!!!!!! (I don't think there is in my family ... I may get some small gifts from people who can't afford more, and I am 100% fine with that ... but FH's family ... at least the ones I know won't ... I think ... )

yea i would be offended too- instead of spending so much time researching how much you paid- she should put more effort into finding the perfect gift for you.
don't let it bother you though- some people are like that- every family has them :)

It's gross - but that's not the first time i've heard of that.
I can go one better... A close friend of mine has In-laws that work this way:
Go to the wedding with an open envelope with $300 CASH in it. Eat the cocktail hour, food's good, money stays - don't like the food - take out a $20.00.
Go to the reception, like the food, music, centerpieces, leave the money alone...don't like it, take out more money.
Bride & Groom don't come over and thank you personally for coming....big money comes out.
Cake is the last straw...like it, seal the envelope. Don't like it - remove even more.
She said if she didn't see them do it - she never would've believed that it happens...
oh my god, I have a friend who does this! Admittedly!

You know what- i think its tacky- but i had a friend actually ask me what we are paying per person so she knows what to give as a gift! She said she didn't want to give less than we are paying a head. I think people shouldn't worry about what to give and just give what they can afford and think is appropriate. I think its sad that people are so worried about what their gift is.

FMIL already asked us what she should tell people when they ask her how much we paid. I wanted to say why don't you tell them to mind their business!!!
I don't know why FH's family is like this?!?!?!?!?
I wish we didn't tell FMIL how much the RH cost us because I think she has big mouth (contrary to what FH thinks) and who knows what she'll tell people when they ask!
Live and Learn I guess
just to mess with the tacky ppl who ask FILs what you paid...they should tell them you paid more than you really did.
I cant believe people actually do this...ask what you paid, I mean
