Do you think this is tacky to put in an invitation?
Original post by EJSD2006
My co-worker is trying to convince me that I should have 'Monetary gifts preferred' printed on each invitation. I think it's tacky, I don't want to insult people. What do you think?

I would NEVER do that. You get what you get and you don't get upset. (I'm a teacher and we use that saying all the time!)

I think that is tacky. I think it is understood nowadays that money is the only acceptable gift

We put that in my moms invitation to my aunts wedding as a joke! She went on to tell the whole family how nuts my aunt was! DEFINITLY do not do that!! That is tacky IMO

We got wrapped gifts from people that were not from Long Island. I think outside of NY/NJ it is more common to give a wrapped gift present instead of a check.

Do not put that on your invites Your guests will be put off. I received an invite like that and was pissed enough to post a poll here
I did not attend the wedding and my mom decied to cancel after sending in her Yes RSVP. We did NOT send checks.

While I agree that printing gift preferences on the invitation is entirely too tacky for words, I'd also like to say that I think it's perfectly acceptable to bring a gift off the registry. There were several things on my registry that I didn't get, and would have loved to receive.
I don't want to start anything, but I do think it's a little rude to say that money is the 'only acceptable gift'. You know which gifts I remember best from my wedding? The beautiful framed photographs of our first date from my friend Phil. The mini album of Polaroids of the day from my Bridesmaid Amber. The incredible website my friend Missy designed with TONS of pictures from the wedding and pre-wedding events. Those mean more than any showy check, which I've already forgotten the amount of.

holy cow--- T A C K Y is just not a strong enough word for that!! i can't believe your friend would say that it's okay to do that.
i guess you know what to expect when she has a party. 'Come with cold, hard cash ONLY, new bills....anything smaller than a Benjamin, need not apply!'

No, it's not understood and we expect that if we receive gifts at all, they will be mostly registry items. New Yorker's tend to give money (at least in NYC/LI) but most people bring wrapped gifts to weddings. I have always seen a gift table at the weddings I've attended.

Nooooo! Don't do it Most people will probably give monetary gifts anyway, but I think you might rile up some people if you add that to the invite.
