Do you think this is tacky to put in an invitation?

Original post by EJSD2006

My co-worker is trying to convince me that I should have 'Monetary gifts preferred' printed on each invitation. I think it's tacky, I don't want to insult people. What do you think?

I think that is tacky. I think it is understood nowadays that money is the only acceptable gift

I agree that you shouldn't put this on your invitation, however I don't agree that money is the only acceptable gift. Your guests are invited for their presence not their presents and should give what they feel is appropriate.

Never put that. Most of your gifts will monetary anyway.

If I got an invitation that said 'monetary gifts preferred', the 1st thing I'd do is reach for the phone to call my sisters & say, 'OMG, did you see what it says on so and so's invitation?' IMO it's tacky, and most people already do give monetary gifts. Go w/your gut feeling.

I've only ever given monetary gifts at weddings. I can't imagine specifying that's what I want though!

I cant believe someone actually told you put that on your invites......If I got an invite saying that I would purposely go out and buy the couple a gift...

I'd probably do that too or I'd be really tempted to not even go to the wedding. While money is probably preferred by most couples, I'd never write that on the invitation. If guests get you a gift instead of money, who cares? If you really don't like it, you can always return it.

oh so tacky, and the kiss of death... you should never put anything related to gifts, money or a registry on your wedding invitation!

Completely tacky...

My dad joked with me about putting 'wire transfers accepted,' but at least he was kidding. I can't imagine someone saying that with a straight face.

I was invited to a wedding this past summer which had a small card included with it stating that monetary donations were accepted...It was awful! I posted about it too ... I was tempted to bring a gift and a not very nice one at that....but of course I would never do that, so we gave the monetary gift which we would have done anyway... BUt IMHO it is not right to do.

IMO.... you get what you get, end of story!!! It's not appropriate to ask for money...ever.!!!

While I agree that printing gift preferences on the invitation is entirely too tacky for words, I'd also like to say that I think it's perfectly acceptable to bring a gift off the registry. There were several things on my registry that I didn't get, and would have loved to receive.

I don't want to start anything, but I do think it's a little rude to say that money is the 'only acceptable gift'. You know which gifts I remember best from my wedding? The beautiful framed photographs of our first date from my friend Phil. The mini album of Polaroids of the day from my Bridesmaid Amber. The incredible website my friend Missy designed with TONS of pictures from the wedding and pre-wedding events. Those mean more than any showy check, which I've already forgotten the amount of.

Very well said, Rachel!!!!! Those are beautiful gifts that you received!!
