Do you think what you weigh has any affect on getting PG?

Original post by Anniegrl

One of my friends thinks I'm too skinny (along with just about everyone else ) and she thinks that I need to gain weight and that'll help me get PG.

Meanwhile, I'm 5'7' and 125 lbs. That's not skinny if you ask me! I just look thin because I have a slim build (narrow shoulders and hips, long arms and legs). I'm pretty fit too so I don't have much visible fat.
I also just had a checkup with my gyno and he said NOTHING about my weight being an issue. So I guess this whole post is really just a big vent

But has anybody ever told you that your weight might affect you getting PG, whether they thought you needed to gain or lose weight?

I'm just getting so sick of people telling me I'm too skinny!!! I'm like, LISTEN, I'm in good shape that's all! Get off my back!
And then to imply that I'm not getting PG because I'm too skinny
She didn't mean any harm, it's just that comments like that annoy me....grrr.....
And my bodyfat isn't so low that I don't get a period - I'm not THAT fanatical about fitness!

I agree with you. I've been told many times that I need to put on weight. I'm about 5'8' and around 123/124 pounds. I eat plenty, and I eat at any time of the day I please. I do work out a lot (usually 5-6 times a week), and I eat VERY healthy and low-fat (fruits, veggies and whole grains). I know that it can be quite irritating that other people assume that we must starve ourselves in order to acheive our lean bodies. I've learn to just laugh it off. When you think about it, it's kinda funny. I find that these same people who make these comments one moment are asking me for weight loss tips the next. So, don't take it personal. Some people simply make comments to make themselves feel better about their own insecurities.

Being underweight is an issue when TTC. There is a link on babycenter.com I believe that has you enter your height and weight and then it tells you whether or not you need to gain weight to conceive. According to this link, I need to gain weight, and I have been trying for a year and there's no other huge indicator that I have fertility issues so I'm trying to pack on some pounds.

The main reason I want to lose weight for TTC is bc I have very bad knees and the extra weight I have on now puts pressure on them, never mind baby weight! Also, this is superficial, but I want to look cute when I am PG! I want my belly to show. Also, I want to be in shape for the delivery. Ok so that was a bunch of reasons.

Though I'm sure you don't want to experience this, there are many women who become pregnant, and actually LOSE weight... not because of a diet, but because they can't hold anything that they eat down.
Either way, I'm sure that when you finally have conceived, you won't even think about your weight.... wait, what am I talking about? That'll be the height of your hormones in your life!

my SIL is trying to get pregnant again since December. The docotr told her she has to gain more weight, she is about 5'6' and 100 pounds. The doctor told her that if she is too thin, it will be very hard to get pregnant. She also had to gain weight to get pregnant with her 1st child.

Check out the BMI calculator if you are concerned.

You are just lucky - I am sure alot of women are jealous.... I would think it's better to be underweight (not that you are) than overweight before trying to conceive for various reasons, I myself would like to lose 5-10 lbs before trying since I am currently 120 lbs and 5'0!

Good luck!

However back in my college days i went down to 110 which was way unhealthy for me (i use to be a big time runner) and I lost my period for months. I had to go to my gyno who prescribed me something that quickly brought my period back but then i had to go to a nutritionist to learn how to eat enough for the amount of running i did and that helped me put on some weight. That is probably what you might of heard about weight and the issues with getting pregnant and staying pregnant.

She knows what she's talking about. The only way anyone's weight becomes an issue with TTC is if a drastic weight loss or gain creates problems with your cycle....and weight DOES have a direct impact on the balance of hormones your body produces, which in turn, can effect your cycle.

As long as you are still ovulating regularly and you are aware of your peak ovulation times each month, you shouldn't have any problem becoming pregnant. Of course, you will have to gain weight in order to maintain a healthy pregnancy...so as long as you don't have 'issues' with gaining, you'll be fine.
