April 2nd 2010 is the friday before Easter. I was told that it was a holiday where noone worked. I believe it´s called Good Friday (i´m not catholic so I don´t know). I haven´t lived in the US for a few years now and didn´t remember. Now that I booked for that day I´m being told that people do work that day. Which is it? Or is it not a recognized holiday but some people have off? Help!! I need this info to help decide what time to start.

Re: Do you work April 2nd?
I've never had off on Good Friday.
Just something else to think about, a lot of Catholics (if you are having any at your wedding), will not eat meat on Good Friday (some people even fast!), so make sure there are non meat options for them.

really? I´m a little worried then. I was totally against a friday wedding because i didn´t want people either rushing or having to take a day off to come to my wedding. My mother assured me everyone has off! I do have catholic family members so I made sure to have a fish option and a vegetarian. (i didn´t know some people fast). i´m going to have to think about this. the good thing is I have some time to change the date without any penalties.

I don't think most people have off from work unless they are school teachers. However, many people do take off from work being that it's a start of a holiday. Also most kids/college students are off then. Just be careful like the other girl said about the no meat for catholics on good friday. I know my grandparents are very strict with this and they only have pasta or fish on good friday. Just something to think about. But if it's the best date for you and your family then you should totally do it. I'm doing a wedding on Sunday and most OOTers will have to take off the following day.

Good Friday is also more of a somber day for Catholics, not a day to celebrate. So this may be a problem for your guests who are Catholic.

Most Catholic's (but not all) do take off or have off on Good Friday. I do know the stock market does close half day...i believe around 1 o'clock to observe the day. Catholic's do not eat meat on this day and yes some fast. It's seen some Catholics as a very holy day. Not sure if u have alot of Catholic guests

Re: Do you work April 2nd?
Are you getting married by a priest? A priest can give to your guests something that is called a dispensation, where they are allowed to eat meat being that there's a religious celebration going on. If there's no priest involved, just be sure there's plenty of non-meat (fish/seafood is okay to eat) choices available. Pretty much everyone but schoolteachers will be working that day.

I do have off but I work in a Catholic school. It depends how religious your family members are. I could see many of the people I work with including many nuns being fine going to a wedding on good Friday - they would just not eat any meat. Maybe you could talk to your family to see how strict they are and also talk to your RH to see if they could offer more non meat items if need be.

Most people have work on that day. If any of your guests are religious Catholics they may take off but it would be for religious reasons- It is considered a holy day.

I do not have off Good Friday - but, the stock market is closed or at a half day (at my old job, my job coincided with the stock market and I had off on good Friday). not sure if this helps!

Re: Do you work April 2nd?
The last time I was off for Good Friday is when I was in College... besides that, I work for a fairly large company where we only get 6 holidays a year and unfortunately this isn't one of them. Good Friday also tends to be a pretty solemn day, so if you have any very very religious people in either of your families or in your bridal party, I would get their opinion first before booking that day- because they may have reservations about it. (I personally wouldn't, but you never know!)

I don't get off for Good Friday. It's also not just Catholics that honor Good Friday though. I am Protestant and growing up we spent Good Friday night at church and we also don't eat meat this day.

Most people don't get off for Good Friday. But the people you want to be there- will be there! Maybe send out your STD's a little earlier than the norm.

Re: Do you work April 2nd?
My office closes Good Friday. Good Friday is the THE holiest day of the year for Christians (even more so than Easter Sunday). It is a somber day. You are to fast during the day and not eat meat at all.
I know some friends that wouldn't have a problem with a wedding on Good Friday and some that would. However, please bear in mind that if you are having a christian religious ceremony of any kind, you cannot do it on Good Friday. No protestant and definitely no Catholic priest will perform a ceremony on that day. Good Friday is the only day of the year a mass is not allowed to be said.
