Depending on your hall, a DOC is not necessary...I asked my BM about them, and she told me that all they do is make sure everything is where it should be, which is really the BM or the M.D.'s job.
I had the same question, but realized that my MD for the day would be responsible for the same things, so for me it would be a waste.
I have two bridal attendants and a MD. I think it is a preference. I am so good with the details but when I met with my DOC, I see she mentioned so much I didnt think about. I also have a large BP that I need to keep in line. So for me her catching all the small details I have planned was a biggy. I went back and forth for months trying to justify the expense. I made FH make the decision.

She is at your house before all vendors. Of course confirms vendors. make sure all your must take pics are taken. Makes sure nothing is left behind. I will send you what my DOC sends to her brides -

First off, that a Day of Coordinator should be by your side from the very beginning of your day, until the very end! As a Day of Coordinator my day begins at your house, the Bride and does not end until I put you and your husband in a car and send you off on your honeymoon.
During your entire affair I make sure that everything goes smoothly. From the most minute detail to the details that no one would think about, I'm on them. From your flowers to your place cards, from spoons, knives and fork to napkins, menues, programs, those are the little details I take care of. Beginning with your ceremony and then moving to your cocktail hour, and making sure your photographer, florist, videographer, DJ or Band, catering hall, etc. set up appropriately and arrive on a timely fashion. I guarantee that a proper timeline is followed and that your entire affair goes smoothly. I will coordinate with your videographer, photographer, limos, DJ and/or Band, reception site and florist to make sure that everything is done according to your wishes. Two weeks and including the week of your wedding I will confirm all your vendors, which includes time of arrival and departure and what their duties will be. I will also attend your rehearsal so that I can meet all your important people (bridal party, parents, etc.). I will coordinate with your photographer and guarantee you that no important picture will be left out.
