I hate that it has become a tourist attraction too. I was working in Rockefeller Center when it happened. I wasn't there that day, but was back at work a few days later. That Christmas, tourists were coming into the store from the U.S., Germany, Russia, you name it, all looking for Ground Zero. It really bothered me. It still does. I'm scared about coming into work tomorrow. I'm in Times Square now, and with the new Bin Laden tapes, it just makes me nervous. I pray to God he wouldn't hit the same place twice....
i think its only normal for ppl to go visit the area. I mean its done for so many similar things...Dont people go to germany to the concentration camps as an example...Its a big part of history now which means ppl want to visit it, nothing negative though

I work right across the street from ground zero. My view in my office is of ground zero
I can't stand looking out my window and watching tourist take pictures ( I have not idea why it bothers me so much- maybe it's because they make it seem so trival)
The memorial serivices are always the worse day here.
i don't like how it's become a tourist attraction either. i try to keep in mind that it is a piece of history now, similar to pearl harbor which is also a tourist attraction. honestly, i just want to tell the tourists to go uptown or over to the seaport b/c it's literally a construction site at the moment, which is also kind of strange to think about.
i think it will be wierd tomorrow going to work on the train. thankfully i take a different trainline to work now than i did back then. but i haven't been down there during 9-11 since that day, so i'm a little nervous.
does anyone know if i will need to go a different route to the world financial center? i usually take the 4 and get off at fulton.
I take the 4/5 and get off at Fulton as well, you can still get out there tomorrow. I know Liberty St. will be closed, not sure which street you walk across.....actually most of the sidestreets will be closed to vehicular traffic, but some are also closed to pedestrian traffic as well (not sure if Liberty will be). Broadway will be open of course to both.
I think if you go on the city website (nyc.gov) it tells you. MTA might tell you as well.

I used to work at the world financial center (across the street) before I moved to the DC area (now I live right near the Pentagon).
I hated walking by and seeing all the people selling memorial tchoshkies. It made me angry that people were trying to profit off of it.
I still can't believe I walked by that site twice a day for 3 years to and from the subway.
I am nervous about tomorrow, I dont want my fiancee taking the metro to his job on capitol hill.
Same for us, and both FH and I work on the Hill. Its tough every year, and I totally understand the fear of the metro.
In both NY and DC (and really everywhere in this country), we all need to remain alert, and if you see something, say something.
to all those who lost a loved one.

that is an excellent point. the concentration camps are also tourist attractions. i know that if i were to go there it wouldn't be for fun like sea world. it would be more to see a part of history, and sometimes it can be an effort to try to empathize and have a tiny glimpse of what people have gone through
Ali, thanks for the info on the commute. that will be helpful.

I do understand how for some it would be too hard to visit such places, and thats understandable. As long as people are respectful and really there for what it represents i guess.

I work in Midtown and still remember everything of that day...walking across the 59th street bridge, seeing the smoke off to the right of me and then a few days later finding out my sister's friend died there. It is something that none of us will forget or should forget. May they all rest in peace especially Janice.

I work on Beaver street and go to school in tribeca, and have to walk by the site every day between the two. =( gives me chills when I take that street, so I usually take Broadway otherwise I start to cry.

I agree, Its going to be such a sad day. I get sad just thinking about it. My FH worked at the clean up 3 months straight with no days off so he even gets more depressed when that day comes along. The things he saw he said were undescribeable

I don't but take the Q train to go to work and when on the Manhattan Bridge, you have a view of lower Manhattan. Makes me sad all the time. I remember where I was this time 6 years ago. I was riding on the Q train on my way back and see the WTC from the horizon. Now it feels empty not seeing it there.
