Rarely post on here, but something is bothering after I haven been asked for the 4th time today. Me and hubby-to got engaged this past July and are looking at a Sept 2011 wedding. Does anyone else who is waiting over a year find it annoying when people ask what date and then say why so long?(if you are doing it a year or two after engagement.) Maybe it's just me, but I thought 1-2 was the norm to plan and 'stress' and financially be able to do it (me and hubby to be are paying for everything ourselves) or maybe I just needed to vent.

we had the opposite problem. We got engaged at the end of July and are getting married in June. People keep reacting with the 'oh thats soon', 'you mean this june', 'whats the rush'. etc. It has been very annoying! But try not to let it bother me, which is hard sometimes. Everyone schedules their wedding based on what works for them so we should not care what they say or think, but its just not that easy!

ugh, totally. It was soooo annoying. Our engagement will be 2 years, 2 months total. Everyone asked us why so long? What are you waiting for? I would say...wanna contribute to the wedding fund??? No, then shut up! Now that I am 1 month away from the big day, those same people are saying...Wow so soon, I can't believe it came so fast. Uh huh....

2 yrs is totally normal...Do these people know how much wedding's cost?? The next time someone asks- 'why so long', I would say-well, if you're going to pay for it, we'll get married next month!!

anytime we see people we say we are planning a 2012 wedding & the looks on their faces are priceless! i hate it!
honestly its only 3 years and it will go by so quick!

i got that too, mine is opposite of yours... we got engaged in june and were getting married in july... they say wow a short engagement, then they act surprised that i started planning immediately!

YES!!! it annoys the hell out of me. I usually tell people we will get married sooner if they want to pay for it. Then they usually shut up

Yes I understand. Unfortunately people will have a comment about everything. If you had a short engagement they would have made a comment as well.

I know exactly what you mean; people don't know how long it takes to plan and save for a wedding.
When we got engaged FH's aunt was like 'oh so fast,' mind you we've been dating for 9 years. She was just upset it wasn't her son getting married.

We get this from everyone, even vendors, which is surprising. I didn't think 2 years was too long. Everyone' s like 'Oh you have more than enough time' Yes but not more than enough money. And I'm in school and taking the bar this summer. Which means a) no income on my part for another year and b) I don't want to be hardcore planning while i'm in school. We did what we though was right for us.

I hate that too! We've been engaged since x-mas eve of last year, and our wedding isn't until July of 2011 and everyone keeps telling me how much time I have, why am I planning everything now?!
Maybe because we don't have the $ to get married in a year or less, and things book quickly in the wedding world!

Same here - got engaged over a year ago and wanted to set a 10/10/10 date only because it was easy to remember..Now I realize 10/10 is a Sunday so I moved the date up - at the time I had 0 money in my bank account for a wedding and no 8 month emergency fund (per Suze Orman).
Since FH and I are paying for at least 90% of the entire wedding ourselves (or rather, I am paying for most of it since FH was reluctant to even have a wedding and would have been happy just going to City Hall for the marriage license), I opted to put the date back as far as possible...to me, I feel like we are already married because we live together and act like husband and wife minus the piece of paper..
Now I've saved enough to actually have a decent wedding budget so it really makes planning a lot easier. $$$ is really the major reason to have 1-2 year long engagements - I never realized how expensive everything is, and just booking a RH will cost me a good $6 or 7,000 which makes my bank account not too happy!!

don't worry... i used to hear it all the time. i got engaged in april 2008, my wedding is june 2010. if FH and I had enough money to get married in 2009 we would have! People don't understand that wedding = $$$!!

I totally feel ya!! I got engaged in AUgust 2008 and I'm getting married July 2010.
Just tell them, 'because we want to.'
Why should you have to explain your situation? Whether its money or personal issues..you use your date for a reason and no one needs to know that!!!

We had this too! We got engaged in February but didn't even get the ring and begin planning til late March and first we picked 3/10, then bumped it up to 9/09. I can't tell you how many times we heard 'what's the rush' 'are you pregnant' and 'that's so soon'

YES! its annoying - people are never happy LOL, if you wait a while they ask why so long? if you do it quickly they ask why the rush? i say....mind ur business HAHAHA
