does anyone here have acid reflux and/or other stomach problems like IBS?

I have been having these problems and have been on and off meds for several years. today i got so sick i am afraid to eat anything! one doctor tells me to eat more raw veggies for fiber and the other one says i need to stay away from it!

can anyone recommend a good doctor? i will go anywhere at this point!

I do not know anyone , but I have a friend that told me she went thru all the tests and in the end she was told to avoid certain foods, etc, and to take Tums. I sometimes have acid reflux, so when I want to eat acidic things, I try to do so earlier in the day and then take a Pepcid before I go to bed for the night. I asked the pharmicist if the Pepcid would cause damage on a regular basis and 2 of them told me no. I had really bad reflux last June, and it was terrible in the middle of the night, becuase I was not getting enough carbs, and eating a lot of acidic foods, and I will never in my entire life forget what that was like.

i was on previcid, prilosec and now i am on nexium, which really helps with the reflux, but the other stomach problems do not go away. i get very crampy and depending on what i eat i can spend hours in the bathroom. not great when you are teaching all day. i cant drink milk, and my doctor told me to cut out carbs from my diet, but then that leaves me with veggies which the other doctor told me to stay away from due to the cramping-they cause too much gas. i cant win

I have IBS and am on meds for it, but only as needed. The less stress I have, the better my stomach is. You have to just find the right food combo that works for you. I've found that I HAVE to eat light at lunch, usually yogurt and fruit (I have found the yogurt to be my personal savior, probably because the cultures work positively with the bacteria in your digestive tract) but if your lacto-intolerant, this won't help you. Once I get home I am of course, starving, but at least I am HOME if you know what I mean. I also eat extremely light when I have to make a lengthy road trip. Where do you live? I know a great Dr. in both queens and one in nassau...the pills I take pretty much help me in either warding off an attack (when I go to a restaurant, for example) or controlling one thats already in progress.

I was just diagnosed with it.. and the Dr. told me because I'm so young (25) that he's worried that excessive acid reflux can lead to damage of the esophogus lining. So, he's making me take Prevacid for a month and then I have to go in to get the test where they stick the camera down your throat to check your stomach. The dr. said that I may have an ulcer and that would in turn make the acid reflux worse.

I have very bad stomach problems. It runs in my family really bad! I have a hyatal hernia (sp?)... and had an endoscopy (the scope down your throat into your stomach). I was on Protonix (a WONDER drug) for about 3 years. I never got heart burn when I was on it. Then when I got laid off I couldn't afford Protonix anymore as I didn't have insurance. At the same time I started eating low carb and I've found that I rarely get heartburn.. unless I eat a bagel or something. I must have a bad reaction to white flour & sugar products!

What I suggest is pay CAREFUL attention to your diet and see what triggers your reflux. I never would have caught my intolerance if it wasn't for me dieting! My DR. suggested stopping coffee, tomatoes, orange juice, etc- NONE of these things really did ANYTHING for me.. I still had heart burn...

I have also found that stress REALLY triggers it- so if you are in a crappy job or something that might contribute to your problems too.

I haven't had any luck with doctors...sorry.

I get a lot of information from the website below. The Bulletin Board definitely show that each person has different triggers.

My FI has big stomach problems and has been to the top gastros in NY. In our opinion.... and the doctor who has done the most for him is Dr. Goode in Garden City right accross from the train station.

He is a gastro.... and just simply amazing....not only is he a wonderful doctor who has changed my FI, FSIL and FMIL lives...he has a fantastic bedside mannor. I HIGHLY recommend him. We just found out he is not covered under FI new insurance but he is going to pay for him anyway....he is that wonderful!!!

I have heard WONDERFUL things about Dr. Goode! A close friend of mine uses him! I have yet to use him....My Dr. is in Queens, his names is Dr. Rand, in Bayside.

I have chronic acid reflux and am lactose intolerant as well. I also take medication, Aciphex, every single day. I had a gastroscopy done and doctor discovered I have a stomach hernia (weird stuff I get). My gastro doc told me to stay away from caffeine, acidy fruits and veggies like tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit etc. I don't know where you are located but if you are looking for a doctor in Suffolk I have an excellent one. My stomach is the worse and no doctor and no medication ever helped.

I agree with the ladies who have suggested that you pay close attention to your diet and look for triggers. I eat as much fiber as I can, and that has helped me enormously. In fact, if I ignore my fiber intake for a day or two I can look forward to another 'attacK' as I like to call them. Also, I cannot let myself get too hungry. If I am STARVING when I eat, I know what I am in store for.

I am convinced that IBS means 'we have no idea what is wrong with you' and I can't believe the differences in symptoms and eating habits of other people I know who have been diagnosed with this. The BS part sounds about right to me

Becky...couldn't agree more! No medication has worked for me either.
Do you girls find yourself panicing when you have to go on a long trip? It's all I can think about.

Last month i was diagnosed with IBS-- abouta week and a half before our 11 day vacation-- decided not to start meds right away and wouldnt you know I have def figured out that STRESS is contributing to it big time-- yes I knew it could but this proved it for me-- I have been fine for the last 3 weeks or so and hope to keep it that way--
Maybe I can go on permanent disability due to STRESS!!!!!

If you think it might be stress-related, you might try deep breathing techniques or closing your eyes and imagining something that relaxes you. I know it might not seem like that would help if it hurts a lot but if you think it will work it has a better chance. Your stomach and your mind are totally connected so think mind over matter!
