or is mine a freak? I thought he would grow out of it...but he is over 1 year...and still squatting...is this normal?

im so glad to hear someone else say this! my 13 year old dog has done this since he was born I thought he was the only one! is your dog a small dog? i always thought that his urination techniques were a result of his short legs.

mine is almost 2 and still squats. i think some of it has to do with when they are neutered - if it is before they 'learn' to lift their legs, then there is a chance that they never will. personally, i love it. my baby has so much hair that lifting the leg could get messy!

Your dog was probably neutered before his instinct kicked in.
It's good that he doesn't, he doesn't have that marking behavior!

My Jack Russell was neutered when he was a couple months old. Sometimes he lifts ...sometimes he doesn't.

Mostly he doesn't, but every once in awhile ... like when there's a neighbor's dog nearby ... he does. It's so funny to watch!
I think I remember the vet telling us that b/c he was neutered, he wouldn't lift his leg. I never even thought about it!

LOL!!
My friend's lab squats and takes a step or two forward with front legs to stretch himself out...we call him Superman.
All of the neutered dogs I've owned or grown up with lifted their leg.

Yabbobay LMAO!! With our dogs, they both know what can get them what they need. Example food, a walk, a pet on the belly, kisses stuff like that from seeing the other dog do things and they getting what they wanted. I think the male saw the female squatting and one day tried, and every now and then he just squats just like her. Plus the female is the baby of the family and he is an old fart, so he does a lot of what she does. I swear dogs are just like children. How old is your dog?

My 2 1/2 yr old male lab doesn't lift. I don't think it affects his ego, so I'm not stressing.

If you had your dog fixed before he learned to lift his leg, then he probably won't lift it at all, though sometimes he might. That is really the reason!

Sometimes Jake, my 7 moths old lab does and sometimes he doesn't. He only does when he is by a tree and he can prop the lifted leg on the tree! It's soo funny to watch! I'm glad he doesn't b/c I'd rather not see those 'things' He is the 1st male dog I've ever had amd I think looking at his privates is gross!!!!
