Does everyone here really think that fondant tastes gross?

Original post by glinda_goodwitch

I kind of like the taste, and at WOTY, wasn't that fondant on the cake? My FH liked it and thought it was a little different from most cakes he's had.

I personally just don't like cake! I never liked wedding cake, and never ate it - and we are having a vegan cake as well as a regular cake - I gueses I'll try it since they are going thru all that trouble for us!

I don't like the taste at all....buttercream is my fave!
Fondant def. looks prettier - but I just don't think it tastes very good.

I have only had fondant once, but I was definitely not impressed. I thought it was pretty unappetizing, actually.

I'm personally probably going to go with buttercream. I think buttercream cakes can be very beautiful as well, and after all, the cake should be pretty but it seems like an awfully big waste of cake if it's just going to be a decoration - you might as well just put icing over cardboard!

IMHO: fondant - NASTEEEEE....

a great baker can make a cake with buttercream that looks like a fondant style.

i always thought fondant tasted really bad and that's what most people tell me.
but i have a friend who is a baker and he told me that as long as the bakery does it the right way it should not taste bad.
he said some places lay it out way too thick and it is overwhelming. he said the key, is a thin layer WITH a layer of buttercream beneath it for good taste. he said it's delicious and that way you get the look of fondant and it tastes nice if it is done correctly.
he's the professional!! i just like cake!!

I agree. If it's made correctly and placed over a layer of buttercream, it tastes great. I personally like fondant, but then again I'm very weird.

jenniesunshine's cake is the only fondant cake that I have liked so far. I know she had a layer of buttercream underneath the fondant, so maybe that's the trick! I recently had one at Capitale and it was gross!

What STBMrsDaniRella described is what they do at Audrey's Bakery-- they put a very thin layer of fondant with a layer of buttercream beneath it. That's what we had-- it looked amazing and tasted phenomenal!

Honestly, I think you can do a lot more with fondant than with any other icing. It just looks so nice. And I would say it's my favorite icing, but that's because I rarely eat icing on a cake anyway. I could not have had the cake I wanted without fondant.

Yup, the fondant at WOTY was kind of pasty. Thus I am now in the search for a beautiful buttercream of whipped cream cake.

I heard ganache or marzipan is another option to fondant to get the smooth look.

And Janie!! Shhhh!! Bad enough I went to Dortoni's bakery last night and brought home a chocolate mousse / raspberry cream rainbow cookie cake!! (Don't ask, but as strange at it sounds, it was sweet but good)

I do not like the way it tastes, but it does look pretty.

My B-day just passed and FH ate one of the fondant flowers off of the cake and said 'this chocolate tastes like gum' . I was rolling!

I guess I'm weird. I hate buttercream, but I think fondant is yummy.

I had to use it at my wedding b/c I wanted snow flakes on the cake

I thought it tasted good

fondant is gross to me, some people do like it ( which is fine!) but the majority of people leave it on the plate at the end of the night, and I cant see paying for that upgrade if no one is going to eat it.

also fondant is almond paste based so if you have any guests that are allergic to nuts stay away from it!

yes, doesn't taste good- we are doing buttercream

I personally have never had fondant, but am going with buttercream because fondant is made from nuts and I have several people attending the wedding that have severe nut allergies (including FMIL). Go for whatever you like! If people don't like it, they will eat around the icing.

Fondant is usually made from powdered sugar, glycerin, unflavored gelatin, and flavoring. I've never heard of almond paste being used in it, but that may have been added for flavor.

sometimes they do and sometimes they dont, it depends on the baker, I have always known it to be done with almond past because my cousin is severly allergic to nuts and i have to make sure that there is nothing even touching what he eats. The baker told me that if i do fondant then it would have almond paste in it
