Does everyone here really think that fondant tastes gross?

I kind of like the taste, and at WOTY, wasn't that fondant on the cake? My FH liked it and thought it was a little different from most cakes he's had.

That's so strange - I'm allergic to nuts and I've never had a problem with Fondant. Are you guys sure you don't mean Marzipan? *That's* made from Almonds.

Different bakeries may add flavoring to their fondants. My bridal shower cake had regular fondant (not that tasty) because it came from a local bakery. My wedding cake had vanilla flavored fondant and it came from a different bakery.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. We tried it at WOTY & were both like 'BLAHHHHH this tastes like wax.' We decided to go with buttercream even though we like the looks of the fondant better.

DH and I both hate fondant - we had a buttercream cake and it tasted awesome! But I do love the look of fondant!

You can do some amazingly gorgeous things with fondant, but IMHO buttercream is way more yummy.

I really don't like any cake at all, the fondant was just too sweet, but you can peel it off!

I dont mind fondant in small doses. My grooms cake had it and it was delicious.

Fondant def. looks prettier - but I just don't think it tastes very good.

we had fondant and it actually tasted all right... i guess it depends on how it's made. i loved the way it looked though.

Your basic buttercream icing is made with butter, crisco, vanilla and powdered sugar. Fondant is made with powdered sugar, corn syrup, unflavored gelatin, and some flavoring (like vanilla). If the fondant is made incorrectly it will be chewy and very very sweet (or have no flavor whatsoever).

Personally, I don't like buttercream at all, and all fondant cakes have a layer of buttercream to hold the fondant on. I'm doing whipped cream!
