Does this sound too much for tips???

Does this sound too much for tips???

So we've met with the reception manager and for our wedding day tips for a party of 190 ppl he quoted us:

1-bridal attendant $125 (which I'm fine with I think)
2-Matre D' (who is not the BM that we've used so far) $800
3-He hinted to tip the BM (himself) as well as the cocktail hour chafing dishes captain.

Does this sound too much????? My fiance and I work in very well paid jobs in finance and are thinking to switch to Matre D's as we certainly don't get paid $200/hr

Let me know what you guys have done when the BM's have dictated how much you should tip.

That seems really high for the Matre D'. I was thinking no more than $500. I think that seems about right for the bridal attendant.

Wow maybe i am being cheap but it sounds really high

That seems right for the Bridal attendant. As for the maitre D, I think that is too much. We went by the rule of $2-$4 per person is the tip of your maitre d.

The normal suggested maitre'd tip is $3-5 per person. So for 190 guests, you should expect to tip between $570 and $950 - $800 falls within this range

As for tipping the BM, I've always heard that unless your BM went above and beyond for you and you were in constant contact with them, you do not have to tip them.

I've heard anywhere from $50 to $150 for bridal attendants' tips.

Wow, I would like to know what the standard is as well. I have about a 270 person list... who am I supposed to tip?

I'm fine with the bridal attendants, and putting together tip envelopes for the waist staff... like, $20, nothing big...

MaitreD: 4 x 270? $1080??

Does he share that with the waitstaff?

matred sounds like it is entirely far too much and honestly tips are generally at your own discretion...i do not understand why they even spoke to you about this

Thats sound like alot!! Our hall reccomended that you give them $3-4 per guest.
So lets say you did $3.00...with 190 people your looking at $570.
THAT sounds alot better to me!!!
Makes you wonder what they get paid without the tip??? I think we should ALL change jobs if thats the kind of $$ they make in one night!!

I asked FH what peple get/expect at the RH he works for.

He said$2 - $3/pp for the maitre'd. The Maitre'd doesn't get paid other than a tip. They dont make a salary. They also dont share the $ with the waitstaff. The waitstaff gets an hourly wage (like $7-$10/hr)

I never heard of tipping the BM. Would you tip the salesman you bought your car from?? If the BM goes above and beyond for you, then ok, but otherwise .

You can tip the captain if you want- $20-$30 would be suficient.

$125 sounds about right for the bridal attendant.

Everyone I hear from who asks the BM (including me) says the BM told them some astronomical amount to tip. I really think its b/c they are all buddies.

is that standard that the maitre'd doesnt get paid?? I never heard that before, but i think $3 a person is more then enough.. no offense but if he doesn't get paid, he's the guy who took the job... and you've already shelled out a lot of $$ for the hall

And they don't even have to take their tops off for it

I agree with you ladies as well. They're buddies and they are trying to help each other. I have been in contact with my BM especially lately a couple of times and he has been very prompt to my messages. I don't know how much I would leave the BM though.

This tipping is just outrageous. We pay 20% for service and who does that go to?????

I think that sounds about average..

I think you are supposed to do between $4-$6 per guest for your Maitre D'

Re: Does this sound too much for tips???

You should def. ask who that $$ goes to...I know my hall told me that half of the tip goes to the waitstaff, and half goes to the M.D.- I guess each place does it differently!

our maitre'd tip is included, and it's $3 pp.

Re: Does this sound too much for tips???

Our MD is also $3 pp. In the last year, it has gone from a 'suggestion' to mandatory. I guess people were skimping.

Re: Does this sound too much for tips???

Our bridal attendant has a 'mandatory' tip of $250.

uuugghhhh tips - as if we didn't pay ENOUGH?!?!?! i've heard anywhere from 3-5dollars pp. My BM went above & beyond for us and told us to please just take care of the MD...but u know what? when it came down to it, we weren't freakin' millionares!!!!! we ended up giving $600 which i thought was very decent(even though our BM suggested more)..it was what we could afford after paying for everything else!!! ...as for a bridal attendant??? i don't even know who mine was lol.whatever i guess...i guess if i didn't even know i had one that it's no big deal if i didn't tip them??? and chafing dish captains??? i've never even heard of their title let alone tipping them (lol i know that sounds terrible but its true)...in the end, give what you can give...u could always mail a check later on after the wedding if u feel u need too.

Re: Does this sound too much for tips???

ps: your BM does NOT need to be tipped.... we did however mail a generous gift certificate to a nice restaurant with our thankyou card since he definetly went out of his way to take care of us.
