Dog owners...

Original post by autumnbride10

The last time I had a bigger breed dog I was just little, and I'm wondering if you could help me. I have a 65 lbs terrier mix. Friday night she had a warm nose, and vomited. It was an all night thing. Twice she vomited up her food and what not, and then twice it was grass and leaves. Ever since then, she has been ocassionally 'wretching'. I don't know how else to describe it. If she lays on the bed, I hear her tags moving, and I look down and her thoat looks like she is going to barf, but nothing happens. Any clue as to why she is doing this? I thought at first she might have something stuck in her throat, but she has been eating fine, and everything is 'coming out' ok. I'm worried....should I be?

edited for spelling...

My boss' dog had the same symptoms and it turned out that the dog's stomach was, and this is going to sound odd, turned inside out. I would take him/her to the vet asap.

The dogs stomach wasnt 'inside out'. What happened was your bosses dog got Bloat. This is when the stomach fills with air, and twists causing the blood vessels in the stomach to be cut off from the heart. Also what ever is trapped in the stomach can become toxic and the tissue of the stomach could die. This is extremely painful to the dog and if not corrected rather quickly the dog usually dies of heart failure. My dog got this on Christmas night. Luckily it was only partially twisted and they were able to correct it by filling her stomach with water to force out the air and then pumping the water back out.

I am calling vets all over...trying to see who can bill me....

Where do you live?

Bay Shore

Have you tried Island Rescue? Its affordable vet care thats on Clinton Ave in Bay Shore. The # is 631-968-8700. Good Luck.

Is your dog throwing up foam, drinking a ton of water, not eating, has a belly that looks like its blown up like a drum? If not its hopefully nothing more serious than a virus or food poisoning. Good Luck.

I have gone to Island Rescue, and they STINK! I have a vet that I go to, but they all want cash up front, and I just don't have it at the moment.

She has none of those symptoms thankfully. She continues to eat grass, but she is eating and acting normally. Maybe it will pass by the weekend.....

my dog (a 3 yr old shih tzu) does that craziness every once in a while. every once in awhile he'll walk around wretching but he'll get over it in 2 minutes. i just think he's clearing his throat.

my shih tzu does the same thing, I think small breeds do this to quite a bit. Makes me freak out every time!

My moms yorkie does this too. I forget what causes it but its not dangerous. To get her to stop i usually just rub her throat.

I have another low cost vet, they are in Farmingville but the Vet is off on Wednesday and Thursday. If you want to go on Friday FM me and ill give you the info. They are a rescue with a low cost vet and might be able to let you pay in payments if you explain the situation to the owners.

Also incase its a tummy ache the dog has try feeding him nothing but boiled chicken and white rice for a few days.

They are great. Right next door is Pet den (animal supply store). They treated my Mom's 1st Sheltie when she was attacked by an Akita and we've taken a bunch of wild animals there.

Last time i was at Selden AES they wanted payment up front. No payment plans. However you can try to take out Care Credit, which is like a credit card for vet care.

Jen, my vet is in Northport, not sure if they take payment plans. They take credit cards though - not sure if this helps. It's North Shore Veterinary Hospital. Dr Berger is good and so is Dr. Russell Fredricks - there are two Dr. Fredricks (i think the other is older and doesn't practice much, but I still ask for Russell).

Thanks Jen. I'll keep them in mind. I'm gonna try calling Commack today, and see if I can get her in over the next day or so....
