Hey guys... I dont know if you have ever heard of the 'Dollar dance' but it is when the guests can pay a dollar to have a brief dance with the bride or groom. IT usually goes for 2 slow songs, and the bride and groom make all of that money for their honeymoon or whatever they want. I know all of my friends from upstate have done this, but I am not sure if it is really tacky or not. I would love the money, but I dont want to be tacky. Whatcha think?

Its how its done.. if the music is stopped and some serious announcement is made... then its tacky!
HELLO EVERYONE... please gather around and take out your money..... this is the only way to dance with the groom... if we dont see a dollar place in the grooms hand you have to leave!
Come on... I cant imagine people really do it like that... or even really take the money... if yes THATS CRAZY!
i agree if the music stops then its tacky

that's not how it's done at all actually. At least not how I'VE seen it. There's usually a person collecting the dollar bills (like the MOH or BM) and it's all done in a funny, tasteful manner. It's not like people who don't have a dollar are turned away. Everybody who wants to dance with the bride & groom dances with them. But those who have a dollar, it's just funny to kinda swing it in the air, and then ya give it to them just as an extra little something. It's not meant to give the couple REAL spending money. It's just a game. In the OLD days, it was meant to help pay for the couple's honeymoon, but not anymore. It's just like every other tradition we see at weddings. They all came from some old idea that we don't necessarily 'follow' anymore. I mean back then, flowers were used for weddings because people didn't get to bathe often and having such a crowd in such close quarters required flowers to use as an 'air freshener'. Nowadays we take showers, but we still use to the bouquets because they're pretty. Look at everything else too - white was only to be worn by a completely chaste woman to represent her purity (the Garters too). In the old days, if you were not 'clean' or if you were previously married, then you had to wear a different color like cream, ivory, or off-white. I see a LOT of people wearing white to their weddings who technically should not be allowed. lol. So the dollar dance is just like any of those old traditions. It used to have a real custom behind it. Just because you don't wanna follow it's REASONING anymore, it's no reason to not participate in the fun if you're somebody who enjoys traditional things. And like i said in a prior post, a dollar is NOT a lot to ask for. And people don't HAVE TO give it. I, personally, am not going to be doing this at my own Wedding. But if somebody DOES want to, then I think they should. There's nothing wrong with adding some good old traditions into your wedding
ita. me & the hubster did not do this at our wedding because it's not part of OUR tradition & we just didn't find it to be nessesary..but it is to a lot of others. i've seen it done at a few weddings & they do it in a really cute way...and honestly when it's someone u care about - u kinda wanna do it. We gave our friends a twenty the last time we did this anyways, it was fun. my husband actually danced with the groom because they were really good friends it was one of the 'funny moments' of the night..it's not a serious thing at all - there was a big circle with people yellin', singin', dancin' & cracking jokes... it wasn't like a line of people waiting to dance to an emotional song or anything ps: mil just went to an african wedding - and this is done at EVERY wedding in their culture...and she said it wasn't even like what i'm mentioning (when the moh or whoever collects a buck in a jar)...she said that the family was literally circliing the b&g and making it RAIN bills on them! all laughing & african dancing etc...
SO all that said to say: everyone is different...to some it's tradition, to others it's fun, and to some it's tacky. WHO CARES. everyone has an opinion....just like some people think cry packs are tacky because 'your expecting people to cry for joy at your wedding', etc. what some love, some dont...what works for some doesn't work for others...and this is what makes all of our weddings unique.. when i go to a wedding I also enjoy seeing what makes their day 'different'...regardless of what 'it' is..different ideas/things they find fun/traditions/cultures...
and above all else - like some pp's said: IT'S A DOLLAR. not a hundred dollar bill so the people who find it fun - let them do it..it's not ur wedding - and when it is yours, you'll do what you want wont u??

Funny thing is I never heard of the DOLLAR DANCE until I came to LIW... BUT my FH cousin got married this past summer... at one point the DJ said.. ok.. who wants to dance with the Groom... lets get those dollars out.. it was Hilarious!!! everyone crowded around... maybe 3 people had a dollar and it was just funny!!! Never looked at it as tacky I guess because we were all DONE( DRUNK ) and MY FH even danced for the dollar dance for a moment.. lmao! It was hilarious.. he didnt really take the money... everyone just crowded around and held dollars in the air... lmao! it was just fun! The way its described on LIW is different.. It seems like people take it serious.. like you dance with the person and hand them the dollar and the person racks up with money... thats TACKY.. but I think for fun... for a moment.. but not a thought out dollar dance to get money... lmao... THE MY FH GETTING DOWN ... LIKE I SAID.. THEY HELD DOLALRS IN THE AIR.. BUT HE DIDNT COLLECT THEM AND TAKE THEM HOME.. LMAO! I THINK AT THAT POINT ITS TACKY...
again - i didn't do it at my wedding.. but: LOL - THIS is what i mean... it's fun when done in the right way.
