I used to download all my music when I was planning our wedding - I wonder if I should delete the program off my home computer Or is not downloading anymore songs enough?

Re: Don't download anymore from Kazaa or other music sites (see article)
Misty Im at around 900 or so songs.
But I download things that the music industry no longer felt was profitable to sell.
If the music was out there, I'd by the album. Unfortunately I was born too late.
Im impressed with Universal lowering the price of CD's.. I think we lost something when we lost our LPs. I still have LPs and love to look at the sleeves and the magazines with concert photos inside. My CDs are a pullout flip thing that looks like a cheap how-to manual. If im lucky it has more than 5 pages. I also like the idea of making CD's worth buying with exclusives DVD acoustic tapes on them.
It's about time the consumer got something for the money they put out there!!!

don't you think its time that musician and record execs make a little less money...and working class schmos get a break? there is one company that is reducing the price of cds...
Erika, I agree with half of this statement...the half about the music execs making less money (a battle I suffer through on a daily basis). But, the musicians and songwriters make JACK compared to what you and I make. And, songwriters are making even less now that their work is out there for free basically..which is at the essence of this battle. It's a vicious cycle...the record companies and publishing companies depend upon sales of their music to make ends meet. They have to pay the songwriters and artists they 'employ' out of the money they make off of their music. The songwriters and artists make less money now because they are being perpetually ripped off by consumers 'stealing' their songs and putting them out there for free. When the songwriters and artists don't make money...the record labels and publishing companies drop them. So they, like the average schmo who gets laid off....just went through the same thing. Essentially, our own technology has come back to bite us in the a$$ because if the industry was making the money off the cd sales, and they weren't being ripped off...the price of cd's wouldn't have so dramatically increased in the last decade. Therein lies the problem!
It is a GIVEN that music industry execs make an assinine amount of money, and that their spending accounts are frivilous and needless. But I can say with complete honestly, accountibility has gone up 10 fold when it comes to this as of late, but it still infuriates me that these people do in fact make more money off of what their 'employees' create.
Re: Don't download anymore from Kazaa or other music sites (see article)
why should people make money on somethingthey did 10 years ago...the rest of the world has to work every day to keep getting a paycheck...I am a teacher...but I don't get paid if my old students remember somethingI taught them...
I'm not a fan of the entertainment industry...

I understand your point now. But I have to respectfully disagree. You are getting paid for your job every day as a teacher, to teach something that already exists, in a way that you chose to teach it. A songwriter gets paid in a lump sum at the beginning of a 'contract' if they so have one to create something from scratch, that will be heard by masses of people and have the potential to reach millions. It is far from guaranteed, and actually, it's like hitting the lottery.
A songwriter gets paid only when his/her song is played, or used...only if it's caught being played or used. If it's not, that is a loss for them. This is their job, and believe me...it is a job. It requires skill that most people just do not have, just as teaching requires a skill that a lot don't have. I will argue forever that a teacher deserves more that she/he gets....and I will also argue that a songwriter deserves the same.
ETA: It's very hard to be a fan of the entertainment industry. And honestly...I'm losing my reasoning why I ever chose it in the first place!
Also adding...
I know that a songwriter and a teacher can never be compared. They are two entirely different entities, but both use their creativity to make an impact on people's lives. Honestly...I can't even make a correlation...(for most songwriters, it's just an 'additional' profession..not the only thing they do because they will starve if so). But I know the songwriters I deal with on a daily basis deserve to get paid for what they do...just like I deserve more money for defending them all the time.

It is very sickening how overpaid some of them are. And the overpriced record deals are gone with the Mariah Carey debacle. But I will tell you, they are not the ones suffering when it comes to this music downloading issue....it's the everyday songwriter, and the every day Joe Schmo's who are working for their companies like me who are.

Misty: I agree that the songwriter should get their due. But its not the publics fault that the music industry screws the one with the talents out of money while pocketing the profits for the big giants. If the people in the music industry reorganized themselves to get the $$ to the people who do the work while making music more affordable, i dont think anyone would object to paying a fair price.

Stef, you are right...and that's all part of the cycle! The first thing that happened in the downfall was the advent of MP3...that's when these companies started losing money...that's when the sales went down. Believe me, I agree wholeheartedly that they have to reorganize, and the constant firings/hirings/firings/firings/firings/downsizing/selling/mergers/acquisitions/agita is all part of that.

Misty.. I agree the everyday schmo songwriter can get scre*wed in this. My beef is that the whole reason this began was overpricing of cheap and rather diappointing CD's. No one every liked buying an album for just three songs. But at least with albums you got 'something'. They are collector's items.
My other fight (That I wrote to my Senator about) was that d/ling gave an oppurtunity to explore new types of music. It gave me BACK my childhood joys. I can't just walk into a record store these days and find those 'CDs'
Well at 900 plus songs.. I'll just back up my drive and move those files to another directory and start anew. Im not dumping my stuff. *firm stance* If it hurts unparticipating parties.. well that does bite.. but something has to be done.
This is a tough battle no real winners and lots of people taking clear advantage of the confusion.

I agree...music completely s u c k s. It's a pity 3/4 of the most amazing music never gets heard because it's just not 'profitable' enough for these record execs with teen queens in their heads. But that is a whooooolllleee other argument.

I still don't agree...I write lesson plans...policemen and firefighters save lives...garbagemen pick up trash that if left could create a plague...
IMHO I think that there is too much money going into the entertainment industry...and this is a way to start levelling it off...
for songwriters...there are always radio stations...

By the way - deleting your collection or moving it off your PC will not change anything. They are tracking downloads presumeably from IP addresses. So you committed the 'act' (which im still unclear how you can civilly sue for somethign that is not illegal in the first place - maybe someone can explain?) whethere you keep the music or not.
SO you might as well keep it :D

Misty - as a Songwriter's wife - I totally hear where you are coming from and agree with you.
Erica - it's easy for you to say for Songwriters there are always radio stations. You are not out there trying to get yourself heard as a good songwriter. There are always positions available for a teacher - not so with a Songwriter. It's even more about who you know. Radio stations typically play music from record labels - and you need to be signed in order to have a label. Unless you are on WBAB's Homegrown, you're not talking to a radio station to play your music.
My husband is an incredible musician who writes amazing music. He plays his original shows in NYC, and in local places here on LI. He has been on college radio shows, and was recently invited down to Nasville to record a demo (he plays/writes Rock music), which has been called by Executives at some major record companies some of the best music they've heard.
So why doesn't he have a record deal you may ask? The Companies are afraid to make a committment right now to lots of people. So, we keep trying to get his stuff heard and hope to get lucky one day at one of his shows. There is only so much the Management company can do for a writer.
Like Misty says, this is not his only job. He also plays in a cover band and edits music before it goes to publication or to an orchestra to play for a concert.

Vicki...I feel for your DH...and all songwriters...and NO there are not always teaching jobs...

I think apple has some kind of arrangement where users can go to their website and download the song of choice for only a dollar. and some other sites are starting to pop up doing this same thing.
see you all can keep kazza. they can get you for dowloading it, but they can get you for attempting to distribute. just go to your shared folder and take everything out and move it to a different spot. so it isnt shared anymore. dont use kazza to play your music anymore, use winamp. www.winamp.com. also keep track of what you DL cause you never know what exactly your getting. or you can just get rid of the program all together which is what I did. a long time ago too. this was all brewing for a while and i used to DL alot.

Erika, you have to do your job everyday....and Vicki's husband I'm certain has to do it every day, night, and weekend night to make money. I'm certain as a teacher, your job extends that far as well, but you are guaranteed a check, but Vicki's husband is not, and we might make use one day of what he writes everyday, just like your students make use of what you do everyday. What sense does it make to stare down our noses at someone else's choice for a career? What Vicki's husband does for a living has more of an effect on your profession that you may even realize. My DH is a songwriter also, and is currently doing his thesis for a music technology degree. The music he works with will be used in music therapy for children with autism. A child in a special ed classroom may speak one day for the first time in his/her life because of what my DH is doing with his music. Sometimes we just have to look outside the box a bit...
