I used to download all my music when I was planning our wedding - I wonder if I should delete the program off my home computer Or is not downloading anymore songs enough?

Misty and Vicki...I truly apologize if it seemed like I was putting down songwriters...that was not my intention...and now new songwriters will have to take this information into consideration when they go into this business....careers evolve all the time...
I listen to the music and enjoy it...and I'm waiting for one of my former students to cure cancer...so I can get in on some of the cash

I just have one question that I would love to hear a legal answer on (and I'm serious). Why is it that years ago it was ok for us to tape songs off of the radio, but it's not ok to download songs off the internet? I can understand it being illegal to sell the songs, but why can't I download a song and them copy it for a friend? I just don't get it.

Jenn - my guess would be that no one technically could track the taping of radio songs - you can't really prove it? Plus, downloading from the web has had a huge following - millions of songs are downloaded so they probably are feeling the effect and loss of sales. (but I'm not a lawyer!)

about the amnesty - you have to apply for it. it's on the RIAA home page I think.

i think the suit is only for people that upload their songs for others to download. not the downloaders themselves. but i would be careful downloading any free songs anyway.
plus if you have a program where people can upload your songs, you can change it to where people can't get into your hard drive to find the songs. but again, i wouldn't risk it.
i had winMX awhile ago but got rid of it - people were uploading songs from me and when they can do that it means that someone smart enough can hack into other parts of your computer and i iddn't want them doing that. so i got rid of the whole thing.

its not the downloading (like taping off the radio) - although I think that is technically illegal too)
but its the distribution of the songs...by sharing your files with others...so if you had taped songs off the radio and then made copies for people...think about all those mixed tapes we made for friends...who knew we were being bad??

It's amazing that an idustry will sue it's own patrons. I find it incredible that the RIAA is arbitrarily sueing people who share files on Kazaa. There should be some cost justification in this lawsuit. along with sueing these people the RIAA should have to cough up the numbers, in other words the should have to justify their production costs of a cd. I know how much it costs for studio time and production of the actual cd. it is ubsurd that a cd should cost the consumer anywhere from $15-$20 per disc. I think in light of these law suits people should show their disgust with the RIAA and boycott the entire industry. If people got together and boycotted the industry for 6 mo. you'd see a reversal very quickly in their pricing and their lawsuits. I remember when recording of the radio was the thing to do. I used to record songs off the radio on to audio cassette and share the cassette with my friends who used to make their own cassettes off mine. Why is that legal and kazaa not. that's what is happening- it's sharing how is that illegal. Just because someone downloads doesn't mean they don't buy the cds they want. And for those of you concerned with your favorite artists being affected by kazaa, it will not be a factor as most artists make on pennies on the sale of each cd, most of their money is made in the initial contract signing and tours.artists who profit directly off the sale of their cd's are little known artists operating their own websites or signed to small independant labels. this whole lawsuit is ubsurd and if americans were smart they would boycott the entire industry(RIAA). we as americans in a consumer driven society are taken advantage of in so many ways $2 per gallon of gas and $20 for a cd that cost less than .50 to produce is insane. and we keep taking it!! when is someone gonna stand up and say enough is enough!!

I would also like to add that I became a huge Dave Matthews fan from downloading songs. I downloaded a couple of his songs a few years ago and I fell in love with him. Since then I've purchased all of the CD's and been to a concert. Did that hurt the music industry? I don't think so.
If they lowered the prices of CD's and singles, I would buy more of them. Downloading songs is a pain in the a$$. But it's too much money to buy CD's of groups that you barely know. I went to buy a CD for someone's birthday and it was $20 after tax. That's insane. I'm sorry but the music industry has been ripping us off for years. Now it's time for me to save some money and only buy the CD's of a group that I love.
