Is there a Dress etiquette?? My FMIL is soooo mad right now at my fh's grandmother because she went out and bought a dress already. My FMIL is mad because she got the dress before my fmil got hers, and grandma also bought the same color as my BM's. She was afraid to tell me thinking I would be mad and upset, but was complaining to my FH all night. Should I really care?? I told my FH that unless Grandma is wearing a strapless dress that looks like my girls' dresses, I really don't care. But, after this whole story, is there an etiqutte for who buys the dress first?? I was once told that the mother of the Bride should buy first, then the mother of the groom.
Who thinks up these things anyway???

Re: Dress Etiquette??
I personally don't think it matters. I mean your fh's grandmother is not going to look like your bridesmaids (and if she does, god bless her). My FMIL asked if there was any color that she shouldn't wear and i was flabborgasted at the question... I think MOB and MOG should wear whatever they want. I 'm not too into etiquette. As long as they are both happy and comfortable, we have more things to worry about! good luck! and oh..I have NO idea who sits around and thinks up the etiquette!?

That's what I was told - MOB buys first, then MOG buys and they should clash. I don't think the Gma's colors matter too much.

Re: Dress Etiquette??
There is some sort of etiquette with this - it's very old school, but all of our mothers and grandmothers know about it!
At my sisters wedding, her DH's mom get the dress first, and my mother was horribly insulted - it started this HUGE competition between the two of them and spiraled out of control (whos bouquet is prettier...etc) Granted, we were dealing with two VERY immature women here, but when I tell certain people that my sisters MIL got her dress first, they actually gasp! It's apparently a huge breach of etiqutte in some circles.
Personally, I think it is silly, but if it's going o get people all worked up, I will go along with it...

Re: Dress Etiquette??
My mom got her dress first but thats only because I cant get FMIL out of the house to go shopping. She says to me 'Don't worry, I'll find something'. Im like 'thats great but I'd like to be there'. Darn, why is she so stubborn?!

Re: Dress Etiquette??
I believe that the etiquette book says that the mother of the bride choses her dress first and then the mother of the groom can choose.

Re: Dress Etiquette??
The MOB is supposed to get her dress first, the reason being that usually in the past the MOB and her spouse were the ones expected to pay for the enitre affair and in that case should have first choice at color and style. The MOG is then supposed to get a dress that is not the same color or style as the MOB. I know my FMIL won't even think about shopping until my mother has bought a dress and my mother won't go shopping until she loses weight!!

Yes! the MOB should get her dress first.
Everyone knows that - it just depends on how selfish they are... take my FH's mom -completely disregarded tradition and got her dress first.
after all, it is her day, right?

Re: Dress Etiquette??
I don't know my FMIL asked me did my mom get her dress yet because she wanted to know what color to get because she said they should be matching and wearing the same color dress. I never heard of that either is that another old tradition or something?

Re: Dress Etiquette??
Thanks ladies, I really wasn't sure, and to be honest, I can really care less who gets their dress first, as long as its not a white wedding dress My FMIL was the one who was upset with Grandma, apparently, FMIL feels that my mom should be first and her 2nd, Oh well, as long as they don't come complaining to me, I have enough to worry about Thanks for listening.

Re: Dress Etiquette??
I think in this day and age, anything goes. If it makes you feel any better, my mother is on dress #8, with every dress she swears 'Its the one!!' So if my FH mother had to get hers after my mother, she may have to wait until the day before the wedding at the rate my mother is going!!!

Yep. My mother has been dragging her a$$ on getting her dress though, so I told FMIL to go ahead and get her dress first. I just let her know the color my mother would likely be wearing.
