I think if you order 8 months before your date you should be fine. Especially if you make sure to have ideas of what you like and don't like, that will cut down on the shopping around time.
Check out http://www.weddingchannel.com for ideas. Go to the fashion section for ideas on gowns, bridesmaids dresses, tuxedos, headpieces and shoes for the big day. You can put in certain criteria that you know you want and the search will pull out what best matches your desires. It's really pretty cool!

Dress - How long can I wait?
I suggest going and try not to worry about what shape you are in. Because, between the time you order it and your final fitting, you will have plenty of time to get in better shape. A professional seamstress, experienced in bridal alterations will be able to fit it for you perfectly between now and then. Make sure the place you order from has a cap on alterations so on matter how much work they do, you only pay up to that amount. It varies in different places, but I think mine is $175 and then extra for a bustle. Also FYI, don't worry if they need to order you a larger size than you usually take, that's how bridal gowns tend to run.
I was really concerned about finding a dress to match the bridesmaids with the flowergirl, who is only going to be 4 1/2 years old. Plus, the flowergirl and her mother, my matron of honor, are from out of town.

Margaret, I am doing the same thing, my wedding is Oct 6, 2001 and I am going to begin looking Feb 1. I would like to loose 10 or so lbs by then and then more, but think a good seamstress can make up for the remaining 20 I want to loose by the wedding.
Don't be too scared though ... I tried on a few dresses already and while I am a size 12 usually.. I tried on some dresses that were 14 and even 16 and were snug ... hence my diet! :)
