dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
Original post by SummerBride10
I've already went twice, but I dont even want to think about going again.
I know the sizes run small, so I'm going to wear a bigger size, but I'm just so obsessed with the number on that dress.
I worked so hard to lose weight, and I feel like I should be wearing a size 4 at my wedding, not a size 8.
I'm seriously paranoid about dress shopping again because I dont want to have a breakdown amount of my weight.
How do you deal with the 'off' sizing of the dresses?

i had to get 3 sizes bigger it's so irritating they should just mark them the same as street clothes

I'm a 4 normally and just ordered an 8 for a BM dress.
I say who cares, its not like the label on the inside is shown on the outside...
The best was when she said, your top is a 6 but your bottom is an 8. Thanks lady! Way to remind me I have no boobs!

Do not let the numbers inside the dresses get you down! It is only a number and wedding gown sizes are even more inaccurate than street clothes.

Thanks everyone for the supportive commets. Lila, thank you so much for posting the pics. That helped to. I know I have to keep an open mind and ignore the sizes. Maybe next time I go, I'll just tell them to bring me the dresses and not tell me what size they are. I pay wayyyy too much attention to numbers

I had an attendant dress from a bridal store for a charity event...it was 10 sizes bigger than what I wear....a 24...I am a 10-24 normally...don't freak out. Just think of it as fabric.

No one knows the size # of your dress!!! Just ignore the number, what matters is that it looks beautiful on you! I am usually a size 6 in dresses. I fit into the size 10 sample, but we ordered a 12. Who's gonna know!
You will look beautiful!

Just remember that bridal gowns are AT LEAST 2 sizes larger than street sizes. and as i was told today, they get the size for the biggest part of you- so if your bust is a larger size than the rest, you would get that size. it's easiest to do alterations if dress is too big. imagine if dress came in and it was too small- that would be a nightmare!

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
I'm normally a 10/12 jeans and L/XL on top, and my dress is a 16. It was taken in a bit and hemmed because I'm short.
My sister works in the fashion industry and from her experience, all manufacturers have different sizing systems, even though you'd think there would be a standard. And over the past 10 years or so, sizing has taken a downturn, meaning a size 8 from 10 years ago is not the same dimensions as a size 8 now. Also, an 8 in one brand won't exactly be an 8 in another brand. The bridal industry seems to be the worst in terms of sizing. Bridal gowns tend to run small, so in essence, it's just a number, not a reflection of who you are.
Look online for dresses you love and try on all different styles. You may find the ones you love online don't look right on you, and yet a style you'd never even think of wearing is the perfect one once you try it on. Try not to let the sizing get to you and enjoy the dress shopping experience!

I'm a size 2-4, and my designer runs very small... I fit perfectly in the sample dress which was a 10! we ordered a 12 just in case i gained any weight in the following 9 months, and while it did need to be taken in quite a bit (i lost a little weight) i couldnt have gone any smaller than the 10 or 12....
do i look like a 12 here? nobody knows what is on the label inside your wedding dress, dont let it bug you too much
Excellent point!!! No one will know what size the dress is...don't worry, you will look beautiful!!

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
As many other girls have stated, do not pay attention to the size on the bridal gowns ! They are so much smaller then street size clothes ( at least 2 sizes ) that you shouldn't even think about it. My friend is a 6 and needed a 10 , i was a 10 and needed a 14 . don't stress it and never let the size of the clothes rule you . I can wear a 10 in some brands , 12 in another ect , I don't care as long as it fits.
Now the number on the scale, that is a different story ....

I wear a size 2-4 in clothing and they ordered my wedding gown in an 8! It all depends on the dress and how it fits. I am sure mine will re-sized down a bit but I would rather have it too big then too small when it comes.
A size 8 is not big at all you should not feel bad! cheer up!

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
I totally know how you feel. I'm a 'plus size bride' and have never been at the weight where I am now. My first experience trying on dresses the woman asked me 'do you feel beautiful?' and I lost it. I sat on the floor w/ the gown on crying my eyes out for about 25 minutes. then I ****** up my pride and kept trying them on. If I didn't do it I prob wouldn't have went back. Someone told me that no matter my size FH loves me for what's inside and that helped me a little when I went back a second time. The number on the tag is just a number, don't let it get to you.

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
Just keep in mind that the sheer fact of the matter is is that the manufactuers cut the dresses much smaller.
My cousin owns a very popular dress manufactuer/company. He said that most bridal gowns and BM dresses are cut smaller there is no rhyme or reason, they just have always stuck to 'old school' sizes. Back in the 40s and 50s a size 14 was equivilant to a size 8 today.
It's just a number... and it's almost laughable!
Think about this.... I was in my SILs wedding in July. I wear a 10-12 in dresses. When I called the bridal store to give them my measurements so they could order the dress, they told me my dress size was an 18! As if I wasn't already having a fat day... all I could do was laugh at how ridiculous it was. And then I laughed harder when I found out that my other SILs dress was the same size and she's like a size 6! Pay no mind to the number in the dress!!!!!!!!! It's BULL!

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
Don't look at the number!! My designer runs very close to street sizes, but I am typically a 2-4 and I tried on dresses in size 10 were almost perfect fits.
I am freaking out my dress is going to be too small as they ordered me a size 4 (dimetrosis), but they must know what they are doing. I rather they has ordered it larger. I have nightmares that when i actually try on the dress its going to be too small (good motivatort for working out though!)

I am a street size 6 and my dress was a 14! So, don't even look at the sizes.

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
Don't worry about the number. As other girls have said, they run small.
As long as you feel good and look fabulous, that's all that matters. No one else knows what the size is. I'm sure you'll get compliments from everyone on how great you look.
When I got fitted for my gown, my chest, waist, and hips were three different sizes and they didn't know what to order haha. The size chart said to order the sample size which was too big on me and was clipped up about 2 inches from top to bottom. The woman who helped me (which is also a family friend) ordered what she thought I should be. I also think they make you order a bigger size so they can do alterations and make more money off of people. We'll see how this goes!!!
Enjoy the process... don't worry about the number size. Just focus on how great you look!

Re: dress shopping makes me feel horrible about myself
I feel the same way I had to get over the number. I wear a 12 everyday and I had to order a 20 because of my bust. Freaked me out, but what are you going to do. My mom wears a 6 and had to order her mother of the bride dress in a 14 and she was all upset. Its only a tag, like everyone else said no one will know.
