So today i began the search for my dress. I tried on dresses last year, but that was more just for fun and to see what i liked and didn't like. I'm now officially on the hunt for THE dress. I struggle a lot with my weight. I've never been happy with my weight and over the past few years i've really gained a lot of weight. Dress shopping today was just not what i hoped it would be. None of the dresses i tried on would zip...none of them. ..and not by a little bit either. i tried on some really pretty dresses but when i look at myself i just feel like a fat girl in a really pretty dress. I've been going to the gym 5 days a week and yesterday i joined weight watchers. So I'm really trying to loose weight. I'm hoping to loose about 30 pounds. But what do i do until then? What if i dont loose the weight. I'm scared that i wont find the perfect dress for me because I'm too fat to ever like i how i feel in any dress. Today was supposed to be a wonderful day. Trying on wedding dresses is something i have always looked forward to. but rather then feeling beautiful i'm completely hating myself. I know not everyone is a size 2... i guess i just always head it in my head that when i got married i would be a size 2..

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
I am so so sorry you had a bad time shopping.. first keep in mind NONE of those dresses run true to size! and maybe part of the problem is none of the dresses you tried on were 'the dress'.
You did say you joined the gym and WW's (and I swear by WW's (I lost a good amount of weight on it) so maybe after losing 10lbs, which im sure you can do, especially between the gym and WW's try shopping again, that 10lbs may make all the difference in how you see yourself!

I am sorry you had a bad time dress shopping. I am definitely no where near a size 2 (and probably will never be). Do not let the fact that the dresses would not zipper get to you. The sample dresses are pretty small sometimes. I went shopping today and there were definitely some that would not go over my hips!
I agree with Stephanie. Maybe loose 10 or 15 pounds if that is going to make you happier and then go again.
Have you been trying on one particular type of dress? Maybe try on a few types of dresses. The dress I got today is very different than the dresses I have tried on in the past.

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
Don't let it get you down!!! I'm also looking to lose about 30 lbs before the wedding, if not 40lbs and its totally doable!! You have over a year until the big day so don't worry about it and stay focused.
You have time to try on and find the dress, so maybe go back in another month after you've been on WW for a little bit. I lost 10lbs so far and its hard, but I'm sticking to it!!
Also try to remember that teh dress sizes are as many as 3 sizes smaller than what the tags say because the wedding dress patterns based on the dress sizes from the 1950's and clothing manufacturers have changed their sizes because women's measurements have gotten bigger.
Lastly, the dress you fall in love with will fit your body and be made for you!!!! So dont let the number make you sad or feel bad about yourself. You are going to look beautiful on your wedding day!!!

Sorry you had a bad time dress shopping and not every is a size too but that is okay I agree with the rest of the girls if you want to loose weight loose 10 to 15 lbs. You should not care what size you are it is only the inise that counts and that is the only thing that matters.

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
Thank you guys so much for all the kind words. I guess i do have some time yet. I'm going to keep going to the gym and really stick to weight watchers. hopefully in 10-15 pounds i will like how i look a little bit better. Its just yucky to look at yourself in this beautiful dress and not like what you see. For the other girls trying to loose weight too we should try to encourage each other! Its really great to hear from someone who was successful on weight watchers, thats very motivating!

I lost 40 pounds on Weight Watchers. I am getting back on the WW train and trying to really watch myself again.
I think we are all trying to watch ourselves and we are all here for each other. Where are you going to WW meetings.

I agree with the other girls.. don't let it get you down..
the problem with dress shopping is, its different from going into a store, seeing what you like and trying it on in your size. Every dress comes in ONE size, and its either too big or too small.
When I found MY dress it was a size or two too small and the saleswoman tried to show my mom and me how it would fit if it was my size. Its really hard, but realize that has nothign to do with you. They can only pick one size so they try to pick something that small girls can hold up, and big girls can still try on.
I'm sure they all looked stunning!

Try not to let the sizing get you down. The dress I picked, I couldn't even get into, the was held infront of me and wrapped around me kinda. And to make matters worse because of my boobs I had to order the second to last largest size available. You will look beautiful in your dress that will be produced just for you!

1. you def aren't fat 2. Those dresses are all in a certain size, ranging from 10 to 16 (sometimes) and like the other girl said that aren't true sizes. 3. you will look great on your day

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
I'm going to the WW meetings in the city. The place i signed up at is on 3rd ave and 57th street. I found the meeting really encouraging and helpful! I've done weight watchers before but always online and i always kind of struggled with it. I can already see that going in person is a whole different thing then just following the plan alone.
And seriously, I'm so thankful to have such supporting girls who are going through wedding planning themselves! I tried talking to my friends about this and as amazing as they are none of them are married or engaged so they don't totally get what i'm talking about. so thank you ladies <3

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
Don't let your weight define who you are and the type of bride you want to be. Sure losing weight, being healthy and fit is a goal for so many of us but coming from someone who spent her entire adult life being morbidly obese and is now 'chubby' it's not what defines me. I'm not sure what size you are but so many places have beautiful dresses for size 0 to 26 and plenty of non-size 8 to try on. I think having someone with you who you trust and is positive will help. I want to lose weight for health reasons but I knew if I tried to do it just for this, it was the wrong reason and wouldn't stick. Good luck!!!

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
I agree... weight watchers is a great diet! I lost 30 pounds in about 6 months by following that diet. It is healthy and you don't have to give up the foods you love. I have gained some weight back but plan on going back on that diet. I haven't started dress shopping but i can imagine how you feel when you see a beautiful dress but doesn't look or feel the same on. I'm sure once you find the dress you will know and you will not only look beautiful in it but you will feel beautiful in it. And dress size is only a number.. so I wouldn't stress over the size. I am sure you wil find the perfect dress!

Re: dress shopping when your over weight
Don't feel bad. I don't know you personally but from your picture I don't think you are fat at all. Back in December i went to try on Bridesmaid dresses for my cousin's wedding and I felt fat b/c all these size 8 & 10 dresses weren't zippering up. all the other bridesmaid did and my dress couldn't zipper. So I had to order a bigger dress size and I felt fat and sad that I had to get like a size 14 dress when i originally buy a size 8. But some dresses just run smaller than what they really are. So don't go by the size of the dress you tried on. I too have always struggled with my weight b/c I always go up and down on the scale. But if you are going to the gym and doing WW you should be fine. You have like a year to get to where you want to get. We can all help you and do this together. Because I'm sure a lot of us want to look amazing the day of our wedding.
