FW decided she doesn't want to spend more than 500 bucks on her wedding dress ('i'm only going to wear it once, what's the point?!). I'm cool with that, as I'm pretty cool with whatever she decides. So here's the question (two parter)
1) Is this possible for a wedding that's now just over seven months away? and
2) if so, where can she find such a dress? She's living in Manhattan, and right now, I'm in the 914, so li, westchester, as well as the boroughs are all possibilities. FMIL is coming to town to dress shop, so i figured I'd try to find them some good places to go.

Yup, my dress was $500. too and I loved it. I had the same idea, I wanted to save the money for other things that were important to us. And I got mine at David's also.

Bridal Elegance also has EXCELLENT prices. She beat everyone's prices by at least $200. She has gowns ranging from $300-$2000+. and whatever she doesn't have, she can order. I fell in love with my dress when I saw it in a magazine. She ordered it for me to see and I loved it even more in person. It came in within 1 month. I only had a 5 month engagement so I am proof that your FW will find something in 9 months.

Possibly also at Lynbrook Wedding Center, though I wasn't crazy about their selection.

Sigh... it's good to know how much i'm doing to flip gender roles and stereotypes on their head.
This weekend ain't gonna happen, but fmil touches down in less than 2 weeks, hopefully they can take care of it. I'm trying my best to stay out of the way of THAT one.

Re: Dresses: Is FW crazy?
Like someone mentioned above, try Phyllis from bridal elegance/gownfind.com. I believe she has a bunch of dresses posted on her website that would fit into your budget.
RK Bridal has great sales. Flowerama in queens has $99 rack sales, plus $150 alteration cap, so for $250 she could get a really nice dress. (most of them were at least $700 and up originally.)

I agree, try Phyllis at gownfind. She can look pretty much anywhere-if she stays under $900 Phyllis can probably get the gown for $500-600.
PS-- I'm getting married the day before you and still haven't ordered a gown

Tell me if I'm wrong girls, but I was on the Jessica McClintock website, and the dresses are freakin gorgeous! I wish I had known before, cause I love a bunch of them (I love my dress too ;) but I could have saved so much money!
I'm sure she will find something beautiful for $500, I wouldn't worry!

Definitely. Tell her to grab a copy of NY Weddings (New York Magazine) and check out the sample sales. There's also a place in NYC that has sample and brand new dresses at heavily discounted prices and donates the proceeds to charity. I'm sorry I can't remember the name---anyone else know it?
David's bridal is also good. Or even J.Crew.

Re: Dresses: Is FW crazy?
Depends what kind of dress she wants. If she wants a plainer, less poofy dress, she could go for a bridesmaid's dress in white or ivory, and that would be less than $500. Or have her check out Nordstrom's online wedding shop. They have several dresses that are lovely--bit more like evening gowns, but still very pretty. A friend of mine got a Tadashi gown from either Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus for a great price. Very elegant. Nicole Miller makes wedding dresses in that range, and I'm pretty sure there are a lot of 'destination' dresses that are $500 or less.

Definitely! If not less than $500, close to $500!
I got my dress from RK Bridal in the city for $550. I tried on a few dresses that were under $500 and a few that were a bit more there.
I ordered my dress at the beginning of November and I got a call between Christmas and New Years that my dress was in, over 11 months before my wedding.
ETA: They are open 7 days a week but, it's better to go on a weekday, you get more personalized service and it's less of a zoo.

Unfortunately, FW is a teacher (hence why I'm asking on here for her, the traffic during the day is much more steady) so doing that is tough Also, since i don't know when her mom is coming in, I don't know that she'll be around to help on a weeknight. but I will pass this on.
