I am registering for my bedding. We saw it in the store and are doing it online. They have a quilt, a comforter and a duvet. They are all within about $20 of each other. I always thought a duvet had a duvet cover - that they were two separate things. Why would a cover cost only a drop more than what it is covering?

I can never keep the comforter from bunching up in the duvet! I hate it!! I will be registering for a nice, heavy comforter!

I don't know, but if you get a comforter, I would get a duvet! You can wash a duvet (most of them) and MOST comforters have to be dry cleaned! Oh, and the quilt, I think that's more of a decorative thing.

I used to have a really expensive comforter and a drunk friend peed on it and ruined it!! Maybe a duvet could have saved it!!

If I get the comforter, which is a pretty color, I will ALSO get the duvet so we can at least change it because it is a different color.

OK, I worked in bedding for a few years so I can answer your question:

A comforter is usually on the heavier side. It comes on solid colors or patterns. It is NOT a blanket, which is much lighter.

A duvet is a cover for your comforter. This also comes in many patterns as well as solid covers. Some people get them to cover down comforters because down comforters usually come in plain ol white. You could also get a duvet to put over your regular comforter if you want something different, but don't want to buy a new comforter. They usually button close and are a pain in the arse to put the comforter in.

A quilt is very very light. I use a quilt in the summer. Usually a quilt will come in a patchwork sort of arrangement, but I have seen them in other styles as well. If you like the patchwork design, you could put a blanket under it to use in the winter.

HTH!

It was very sad! My stupid friend got drunk (we were young, like 15 or 16, and she was sleeping over) and she just freaking peed all over my bed. It was horribble!

Never fear, your BBB expert is here (I am actually a planner for the BedBath.. and was a Buyer of blankets and down comforters for a while...)

OK, Very good Eleanor!

DUVET - covers your down (or alternative down comforter). I find the prints (at BBB) to be a little more hip than traditional comforter sets

QUILT - A bedspread or coverlet if you will - with, yes, traditionally patches soon together, but they come in solids as well. More lightweight.

COMFORTER - Ahhh...good question...a comforter can be two things
1) A White comforter that you buy in different fill powers depending upon how much warmth you want out of it. You buy it in white, and than cover it with a decorative DUVET. This is the more luxurious/expensive option, but hey, you're registering.
2) If you don't want to deal with the above, than comforters/bedspreads also come in printed styles. It is usually sold in sets - with shams, bed skirts, etc.

I was just a printed comforter/Bed-in-a-bag kinda gal until my friend at work hooked me up with a duvet. I had to get the down comforter to fill it, but I LOVE the way it looks on our bed - so lofty and comfy! We roll it back at night, and then sleep with a down blanket which yes, is different from a quilt, comforter and duvet!

I have a duvet now and the advantage is that its cheaper to dry clean then a comforter. SOmetime they can bunch but you can safety pin the bottom corners. My FI is allergic to down (what's new) but you can get a hypo-allergenic (sp?Im drunk) filler.
