E-Party Question - Opening up gifts at the party...

E-Party Question - Opening up gifts at the party...

Is it necessary to open up the gifts you receive at your e-party? The long story short is this: FI doesn't even like the idea of having an e-party at all. I want one, as do my parents, so to compromise I said if we have the party (which we are) we wouldn't sit and open all the presents at the party. FI doesn't like being in the spotlight and I think he's also a little concerned about what his family is going to give in comparison to mine. I don't have a problem with either opening the gifts at the party or not. On the other hand, my family has always opened up the gifts at the party and thinks I'm being completely disrespectful for not wanting to do it that way. To make matters worse, my parents are the ones paying for the e-party (in addition to the wedding reception and some other big ticket items) so they feel they should have a say. I think having the party but not opening up the gifts is a fair compromise but unfortunately my parents don't think so. I don't know what to do... both FI and parents are standing firm on their opinions and I feel like I'm stuck in the middle trying to please everyone!!! Honestly is not opening gifts being rude??

Thanks Ladies!

I don't think not opening gifts is rude. Or I went to a Bridal Shower where the Bride really wanted to have a fun party withher friends so she requested that the gifts be wrapped in clear paper so she could just show off the gifts without taking the additional time to open them. She wanted more time to party.

Your not supposed to open gifts at an e-party
what we did was invite just a small group of people back to my house ....Our god parents, Grandparents, parents and bridal party to watch us open gifts

For a bridal shower- I would personally say to open presents... BUT, for an engagement party I have NEVER seen the couple open presents, ESPECIALLY since true etiquette says that guests do not HAVE to bring a gift- WE ALL know most do, but they dont have to...and if it is going to cause issues with FH and his family and if it will make them look 'bad' for not giving as much, I WOULDNT open the presents... I think people would rather have fun and dance and mingle than watch others open gifts anyway- JMO

Thanks for your replies girls I really appreciate it. I really feel better about not opening up gifts at the party. I just hope I can convince my parents it's a good idea otherwise they are going to be very dissappointed...

at my engagement party at his parents house i didnt' open the gifts until the end, only upon people's request, but that was when only a few close people were left and only a few people were looking.
