Ebay and Paypal

I just bid on something and won the auction. I read something about paypal. Do I have to pay extra to use that service?

Also, when is the seller allowed to charge sales tax?

Paypal is excellent - FREE and fast and easy.
Sales tax? Dunno, I never paid sales tax on ebay? I find that strange.

Yes paypal is free. the seller gets charged to use it not you.

The seller just emailed me saying the item which was 11.99 gets 4.40 insurance and then 7% sales tax on top of that. Is this right? Where can I find out about the tax?

It is a pampered chef item.

$4.40 for insurance is ridiculous!!!!!.... it only costs about $1 for stuff under a certain amount... i've never been charged tax either.. but thats up to them i think, not sure.

Sorry my mistake. 4.40 is for the shipping. And still 7% sales tax.

I paid tax on a item I bought on EBAY once... I thought it was b/c I live in NY... it said if you live in NY you have to pay 7% tax on the item. I sell stuff on EBAY a lot and never charge tax, but then again this could be b/c the seller I purchased the item from has a real store....

Are you buying from a Pampered Chef dealer? If so, that's why you're paying sales tax. It would be the same as going to one of their demos and buying the stuff. If you're buying somebody's stuff who's not a dealer, they should not be charging you sales tax!!!!

What state is he in? I have seen people in CAlif. try & do this.

If he's not a dealer then he ABSOLUTELY should not be charging sales tax!!!!!!! I would ask him about it - it sounds like he's pocketing that 7%

And BTW - as far as I know, no state has a sales tax exactly 7%!!!!!!!
