I'm thinking of applying for a PhD program, but I have a grave fear of rejection. What do you girls think? I teach part time with my Masters... I could apply for a full time position if I were in the process of getting my doctorate... It would be a ton of work... Advice please!!

Re: Education Advice
in this day and age, the more education/degrees you have the better. If you can, I would totally do it. I just started my MBA part time and its rough with work (and wedding plans) but in the end it will be worth it because I'll be so much more marketable and have more opportunities.
you should TOTALLY do it! If I can get into NYU with a subpar GMAT score, you can get in anywhere. I fully believe it was my essays that got me in, and I know you're a good writer also!
good luck!

Re: Education Advice
my best friend teaches at SJU and she got tenure last year and will finish her doctorate this summer- she's just waiting for her disertation to be published...
I know it took a long time (& $$- but she went to Columbia)- I would say go for it- its a great career move and you'll be eligible for a pension, great benefits, etc
She works 12 hours a week- I am really tempted myself- good luck with whatever you decide

Thanks girls. I'm scared. I havent even sent in anything for publication in a few years, and I feel like since I started teaching I've turned super lazy! I think its making me forget everything I've learned, but I gave a spur of the moment class today on iambic pentameter, and thought, '****, I do know this stuff!' and now I'm thinking maybe I should stop wasting time and go for it... Hm...

Re: Education Advice
i say go for it as well.
it's long and hard and probably a pain...but in the long run it will be worth it. and if u can do it earlier and have time for it...it'll probably bit a tad bit easier.
i was/am considering applying for a phd program at some point in the near future (maybe)...my issue is that its soooooo much $ and takes forever...and i want to have babies in that near future so i dunno how this will all pan out

Re: Education Advice
are you willing to relocate to get the PhD? If so, then you can apply to a lot of schools and not worry too much about rejection.

Re: Education Advice
I say if it's something that you really want then go for it!!! You are definitely smart enough to get accepted into a program so don't fear rejection. It may be hard and a long road, but the end results will be well worth it. Good luck!!!
