I cannot help but think it looks suspicious. I am sorry, but the fact that the exit polls called W the winner before the tally was in AND before the polls were closed in other time zones had an effect on the voting in other parts of the country. I wish I could remember who did the study...it was a trade magazine for the media....

Do you even know what an exit poll is? Its a poll that is conducted... polling voters who just got out of the booth. Aren't polls are broadcasted throughout the day on the news? Correct me if I am wrong.

Of course I know what an exit poll is...are you serious? That is why the exit polls affected the tallies...as I already stated

The polls ARE broadcast throughout the day. I know this.. the problem that the article cites is that the exit polls, which are not an exact science, seem to affect the way people vote, or even affect IF they vote. It has been a problem for years, not just with this past election. People have been proven to believe that:

1- exit polling is a perfect sample and can clearly predict the winner in an electoral district, which it cannot.

2-if larger, more influential electoral districts that have *determined* who won the state isannounced before a district's actual polls have closed, then it can affect their desire to get out & vote, or can even change undecided voters.

3- the networks use exit polling to be able to *corner* broadcasting for that day. Unfortunately, when people see something on the news (especially if a graphic enhancement is used to demonstrate) they believe it as the truth. People..not one person...but people.

All I am saying is that the system of the electoral collee is severly flawed, and that the democratic process is clearly flawed when qualified people are denied their right to vote. I am glad the Jeb is makig steps to enroll more voters, but it does not solve the overall problem.

I am not *whining* because W is pres....I am disappointed in the general apathy that exists in this country.

Regardless of whether or not you believe W or gore should have won is not the point. The point is that we, as americans are frequently telling other countries how to set protocol for their democratic elections, when we have failed miserably in our own. There was so much going on in Florida that it is nearly impossible to compile it all without a congressionsal task force.

I think the point we are trying to make here is that the winner is not always what is important...the system is, and the electoral college has failed us again and again.

I cannot recall right now which president it was, but there were actually cases of a popular vote winning and the electoral vote went to a different candidate....and what about the famous headline Dewey wins??? he didn't!!!

Exactly it doesn't matter who actually won but what sassy is implying is that W's brotheris a fraud the republican partya fraud soooooo that is why I think dj & I are jumping to defend she is not implying the system failed (which it may have ) but bashing W ...

Sorry if my whining is getting in the way of your apathy

After reading this thread I had to put my in my $.02. First, Let me say that Sassy did say that it was not only the outcome of the election that concerned her, but that our system is extremely flawed.

Sassy

It's very easy to say, 'oh it's just the Democrats complaining' instead of really LOOKING at the situation. Free elections are the hallmark of our society, our Government and our nation- and at this point, I think there's potential for a lot to go wrong.. and that isn't right- this is America..

Our system needs to be revamped. It is not working. I say this for no other reason then I hear people talking about how their vote does not count and it disturbs me. Disturbs me because it is true (unless you are a swing state). I think that instead of viewing the debate about the 2000 election from political party stances we should start to view it from an American stance. Instead of arguing about who hijacked what election we should try and figure out how to make our voting system more secure. We want to try and start democracies in other countries!!! We should spend some of that time repairing our own.

I agree, heidi. That was the original point of this post. The (again) after stolen was added as an afterthrough for thosse who beleve that if it did happen it wouldn't be the first time, but it wasn't meant o bash anyone, although I do feel there are a lot of things that somply don't add up. I think we need to figure out a way to make sure that our voting is secure. We talk about trying to install free elections all over the world when our own aren't all they're cracked up to be. I think we need to revampt the system entirely and I think standardizing it across the country is the only fair way. All elections materials and ballots need to be beta tested before they are used. Then the whole hanging chad issue would have been solved BEFORE november.

I just don't understand how now in Fla you vote by touchscreen. How many times have you hovered your finger over one thing on an ATM screen w/o touching it and it still registers? If the screen is sensitive and records fraudulent votes, and we have another problem like last time I will scream.

ETA: I read somewhere this past week that Fla (not sure if whole state or just parts) will be voting by use of computer touch screen.

That's true and I think its just as ridiculous as you do, however, I was told that they can't use the touchscreen unless they find a way for it to create a paper ballot because they need something tangible to be able to perform the recount. You have a lot of the same people in office down in Florida that were in office during the 2000 debacle, so the outlook isn't very promising. But I'm optimistic (as opposed to be realistic..at the same time).

your use of the word 'stolen' in option 1 is a matter of opinion

no it's not. it is actually a misrepresentantion of what actuallyhappened as determined by the Suprmeme court.

perhaps the computers are like ATM's and they print out a receipt that you have to hand into the workers.

All I can say is that I'm flying overseas the day after so I will have a respite of all the articles and news reports over who won or should have won.

Re: Election Fraud

They don't print a receipt!!!!!!!!!!!!!

varous advocacy groups have tried to set rules that there must be a paper trail but they've all been shot down by the florida election officials! And my Fh who works with computers, has a degree in computer science, and spent years discussing this with the top minds in the field is VERY concrned because experts have looked at the computer voting systems and said flat out that it isnt at all safe. A bunhc of students at some school were able to hack into it. Look, if Microsoft itself can crash from a hacker, or ifsomeone can steal my back account # from chase's 'secure' sites, then there is a realy problem, and I think people are in deniual if they think computer voting is safe.

Re: Election Fraud

I'd like to add that the ONLY reason the Dems are seen as 'whiny' is because the race was prematurely called in favor of Gerge W. Bush so the Dems were the ones 'contesting' the election. If they hadn't all followed fox news' lead and stayed with their original call, which was Gore, Gore would ahve been called the winner and the Bush camp would have protesting and they would have been the whiners. And there were so many problems and so many inconsistencies, that you just have to admit, tat really, the election could ahve gone either way, depending on how the votes were counted. So really it was a matter of media spin and all kind of compicated stuff, who became the winner and who became the whiner. it had nothing to do, in my opinion, with the actual fair results of the election (which was impossible to find out with how botched it was), or the temperamtn of democrats vs. republicans, because you can bet your sweet GOP @$$ that had the race been called for Gore with so many votes not counted and so many dicrepancies that the repubs would ahve done just as much 'whining' and rightly so.,
