Elizabeth I am so sorry for all the mishaps with Luke. You must have been terrified, and you must be completely drained from the emotional strain this puts on you.
Me and Sophia had a mishap ourselves. Well Mommy did, and Mommy is still trying to forgive herself. I was strapping her into her carseat in the living room. It had been on the couch (which is a deep firm leather couch), but the dog jumped up on the couch with what looked like the leg of a squirrel (later inspection found it was a leg of a squirrel...) and I grabbed the seat up and placed it on the piano bench. Just as I did the final click on the restraints...honestly I don't know what happened except the next minute the seat was turned over on the floor....my God I can barely tell this story...everything happened so fast, I swooped it up. She was of course screaming, I yanked the restraints off and pulled her out. By the time she was out of the seat she had stopped crying. And by the time I got her into her nursery to check her in her changing table, she was smiling. Thank God, but of course, that put no fears aside. I didn't know if she had hit her head or not becuase it all just flew by.
I called my sister who was my angel last night and she first told me all the things to check for and watch for in looking for a concussion. She promised that without redness or a lump, there was more than likely nothing to be concerned about, but she knew as a new mom I would be worried no matter what. We went over everything on the phone, and then I called the doctor who confirmed everything she said. I watched her like a hawk all night, and fortunately..Sophia is fine.
I have never felt anything like that in my life. I have never felt so irresponsible, careless, stupid, panicked, out of control, frantic, unsure, insecure...the list goes on and on. I literally hated myself for about 12 hours (until she woke up in the middle of the night wanting to be fed and then wanting to kick and play with her bunny mobile instead of going back to sleep.) Whatever. I would kick and play at 3 am now until the cows come home.
Anyway I am sharing this because I know that if I read this somewhere I'd be like - 'whatever, that woman should have been paying more attention...I would never let something like that happen'. But you guys know me and how careful and cautious I am. I am a good mommy - but mistakes happen, and maybe by seeing me make such a bad one, all those new Mommies To Be will be double careful. The biggest lesson I learned, BESIDES never putting the seat on the piano bench, is no matter WHAT when she is in that thing - STRAP HER IN. If she hadn't been strapped in, this story may have been extremely different.

I had seen my husband put the seat on the bench once to get her ready to go out as well - so hopefully my mistake saved her another fall from him as well.
Thank for letting me share.

After I was over half the panic mode, and just taking Sophie in and out of well lit rooms looking for pupil dilation (poor kid was probably like - ma seriously i didnt' even touch the ground...)my sister told me all the mishaps she's had and I realized that I am only human.
Her 1 year old fell head first out of the minivan because she had gotten herself out of the seat without Karen knowing.
Her other child at 2 slipped out of the stroller while they were carrying it down one of those high flights of stairs at the beach.
My mom dropped me (who knew!)
My aunt dropped my cousin on the pavement
The list goes on and somehow it made me feel a tiny bit better.....
