My mom I know is not having one for us - she's not into it. We already got a question about whether we're having one, the day after we got engaged!

Re: Engagement Parties
My parents really wanted to throw one for us, but we did not want one. We felt like we were asking people for gifts if we had one.

Re: Engagement Parties
We threw an engagement barbecue in our yard. It was very informal and fun.

Re: Engagement Parties
As of right now NO. It is just another expense and most of my relatives live out of state. If we do have one, it will be a low key BBQ in the backyard

Re: Engagement Parties
We had an engagement party in my SIL's backyard, it was wonderful to see all the family and have everyone meet before the shower, wedding etc...

Re: Engagement Parties
My engagement 'party' was the night my fi proposed. He arranged for the limo to pick up all my girlfriends from HS and we all went to a club and had a blast celebrating. Afterwards we dropped everyone home. It's not typical in my family (and maybe culture?) for engagement parties to be done...but if God blesses us with children, we' re definitely doing things 'right' for them - I feel like I missed out on a lot because of custom.

Re: Engagement Parties
No engagement party for us either, both FI and I didn't want one. I got questions like that right after we were engaged as well, people stop asking after a while.

Re: Engagement Parties
For those who had the bbq - did you throw it yourselves so the invites came from you?

Re: Engagement Parties
We didn't have one, although it was a big deal to us, all of our friends and family are spread out all over the country, I didn't want to ask anyone to go to the extra trouble. Even if you want to throw one for yourselves, maybe just say something like 'no gifts please' and just throw a big party

Re: Engagement Parties
We are having one, but that's because my family lives in Ny and his in Canada and Boston. We are having the wedding down here, so his parents wanted something that their family could attend if they dont' come to the wedding.
We are having a themed party at a hall up in Boston, much like a Knights of Columbus. We are making the food ourselves (along w/his family).

Re: Engagement Parties
we had one last september (the weekend of some tropical storm )
My family was totally not into it, but I didn't care. I wanted my family and his family to meet prior to the wedding, since they had never met in the 8 years we'd been dating.
It was going to be a Backyard BBQ, but due to the tropical storm, it was a half-outside under a very shaky tent and half-inside sit down party.
We had a blast though! And the families met and got along!! wooooo!

We didn't have one. My FSIL wanted to throw us one, but never got around to it. I didn't mind though...I guess I never understood the reasons for them...

Re: Engagement Parties
No I am not having one. I find them unnecessary. The people who want to congratulate you for an engagement will do so regardless of if there is a party or not. We already got a bunch of gifts without having a party.
