Do a lot of poeple have engagement parties? my family wants to have one but i dont know if people really do that.

We had one! We got engaged in January 2005 and had our engagement party in August 2005. We are getting married on September 29, 2007.

I think they are more common around here, but I didn't have one cus all my family lives out of state and they wouldn't have been able to make it- and they have never heard of people really having them- unless they are like wealthy socialties. But I kinda wish i had one!!! Even if it was a small one in FH's back yard.

they are becoming more common , however with all the friends and family I have who are married, none of them had one and I didn't either...they are not something done in either our families... not sure if it is cultural, but I am Italian and Dh is Ecuadorian and neither of us have them in our families. However, we got engaged right before Christmas, and our families were celebrating the holidays together anyway-so my mom made an even more special Christmas eve - whoever wanted to give us gifts did- but it was not expected

I didn't have one. We opted to go out with friends to a lounge instead.
The only person I know who ever had one is my older brother. His ex-fiance wanted to have one because it was common in her Italian family.
They got a lot of cash, it seems, but broke up later that year. They had their engagement party two years before their scheduled wedding.

I didn't want one but FH really did so we had one!
I was engaged on Thanksgiving weekend and we had an E-party in March. I wanted to have one because we are having a 2 year engagement. I think if you are planning your wedding within a year a big e-party in not necessary a family dinner should be good.

I had one, and know quite a few people who have but at the same time know alot of people who haven't ...If you want one go for it, that should be a reason for doing it, dont do it bc others do it or dont do it, just do what you like

We had an E-party 3 months after we got engaged. It was a lot of fun and we go a lot of gifts.

I didnt have 1 bc my whole family feels like its asking for a gift! But honestly now that i didnt i wish i did. Its 1 time in my life that i could of done it and we didnt!!! I say go for it!!

Same here. I've never been to one either.
I personally wouldn't have one unless there was at least a year until the wedding... Too close to the wedding is a little much for people.

I didn't have one even though some families pushed for it we felt at the time engagement parties were kinda cruel since people are paying for a shower gift, wedding gift etc all ready. Now I realize more people do it and its more or less a party for the entire family to meet and greet each other.
Its not needed but if i went back in time I would of prob. had a very small one.

We are having one since we are having such a long engagement! We want both of our families and friends to all meet before the wedding...which is 2 years away!

We had one (my FMIL insisted on throwing us one b/c my FSIL had one) and we had a great time! The guests still talk about how much fun they had! They can't wait for the wedding!
I only wanted a little celebration in FIL's backyard with just close friends and family, but I'm really glad we had the big E-party. It was so much fun!!!
Actually, it was also a chance for my family to meet FH's family before the wedding & get acquainted since my family is from FL

they are pretty common enough. i would def. do it b/c this is a happy occassion! Celebrate! b/c if you dont, you can never go back in time and get to change things. we did it and i am so happy! - we put the money we got into a cd account and we are using it toward our honeymoon to tahiti!

we had one. but it wasnt anything crazy, my mom just had it catered at her house in the backyard and rented tents, tables, and chairs. we got engaged dec 04, eparty was july 05, married june 06.
