We are having a small engagement party in our backyard with family and close friends we are asking to be in the wedding. We are doing a luau theme, I can't wait to decorate!

Re: Engagement parties??
We did not have one. We felt it was too much to ask for from our guests. An engagement gift, shower gift, wedding gift. Plust the girls that are going to the bachelorette party. It just seemed like too much. And we had a two year engagement.

Re: Engagement parties??
We had one and it was such a great time. We did it low key at my mom's house in my backyard. It was so much fun and I'm glad we did it!

Re: Engagement parties??
we had one...my original plan was to just invite 20 closest friends and family my mother in law insisted to invite more (since she is paying) so we ended up with 120 guest....it was fun but exhausting.
If your family wants one...just do it..you'll have fun...

Re: Engagement parties??
My FMIL has a party at the house with our immediate family (like 25 people). THen we had our family and friends stop in and out for cake after we finished eating.

Re: Engagement parties??
Personally, it was a happy occassion so we went out with his parent's and my parents for a really nice dinner. I know this is going to sound horrible, but sometimes it gets a bit much for people - an engagement party, a shower, then a wedding gift. It's not always easy for people, especially older relatives who really want to give and even on the time pressures of friends and family. If you want one and can afford to throw one - go for it. I think I would have hesitated registering for more expensive stuff if I had both an engagment party and a shower. We didn't have a big party for the engagement and I don't regret that since I'm planning the wedding I really want, and like one girl posted- what if the relationship doesn't quite make it to the wedding day? It's personal preference is the bottom line.

Re: Engagement parties??
FH and I are only having a 6 month engagement, so we did not have one. I have never been to one. I know they are pretty common though.

Re: Engagement parties??
FH's family threw us one. if they didn't do it then we just wouldn't have had one. its not something that was important to us, but in the end we got a lot of gifts and had a great time!!!

Re: Engagement parties??
We had a small eparty...about 40 people. It was just my close family and FHs close family so they can meet and our BP. We wanted to keep it small...just at a restaurant, no DJ, no dancing just a nice way to get everyone together to meet and have some dinner and drinks. It was a lot of fun and I caught the cutest picture of my dad and FFIL bonding at the bar! I really enjoyed myself!
