Fh and I got engaged this past Christmas. We have not planned our wedding until January of 2010. However we are planning an engagement party for the end of April this year. Some people are asking me if I have registered anywhere. I didnt and dont plan to...I really dont have anywhere to put the gifts that people will give me and I dont know what I am going to want in 2 years. Do you think its rude of me not to register??

Re: Engagement Party
I didnt register since i had the same storage issue. My family was very good about giving cash... FH's family however asked over and over again about a registry... Well about half his family picked out frames or vases or gift cards.. Which i really should use soon come to think of it... .. Anyways its up to how your family is. Maybe do a honeymoon registry just so something gets paid, but only tell people if they ask. Or just do like my uncle said i should of.. Tell them you registered at Bank of America.

Re: Engagement Party
I dont think its rude. However some people do not want to give cash, since they will be giving cash at the wedding...so I would assume that you will still get gifts. Maybe just reg, for a few things?

Re: Engagement Party
I was actually in the same situation as you are. We didn't register. You will be so much better off waiting until you know what you need. Plus the money you make from the party can help you pay for the wedding or save for something else down the line.

Re: Engagement Party
The problem is that people will want to buy you gifts, so if you don't register you will end up with lots of stuff you don't necessarily want.

Re: Engagement Party
lots of people choose not to register for the e-party.
you might consider putting a handful of things on a registry and only let people who ask know that you have one. DEF don't put it on the invitation, or a lot of people will try to buy you gifts.

Re: Engagement Party
I really like the idea of registering for a honeymoon...at least people will be giving me somehting that I know will go to good use...instead of a Lenox vase or silver teapot...

Re: Engagement Party
My friend is getting married in 2010 and her engagement party is at the end of march, she didnt register. She want the $$$ so she can save for the wedding. I don't think its rude at all, you have a legitimate reason not to.

Re: Engagement Party
my e party is april 19th, wow i dont feel alone! planning for this thing feels like planning for a wedding. maybe for me, because of my culture, e parties are expected to be like weddings, and therefore everyone usually gives cash and or gold jewelry. the other day, though, my mom was like, hey don't expect everyone to give cash, i was like 'they have to!' think about it, they dont know what my house looks like/ will look like, more importantly they dont know what i need, who in the right mind would come with gifts when i never made a registry?? i say you did good! after spending a fortune, you def deserve the cash, and like another member stated, you can use the money for the wedding or something else.
how many guests will you have? are you renting a hall? i would love to know what others are doing.

I think it's fine not to register. Most people will give you cash anyway.

Re: Engagement Party
I would maybe register for a few things that you could use for now. Some people will give cash while others like to gife gifts. We ended up registering and getting a mix of both.

Re: Engagement Party
I am breathing a sigh of relief...I thought I was the only person haveing a mini wedding for my e-party too...The other day I told FH that we should just get a church and have like a surprise, because its going to be just like a wedding at a smaller catering hall...We are inviting almost 140 people...(and hoping that not everyone shows up!!-lol) I dont think the room is going to hold that many people...And its on a Friday night and its formal...people are going to be wearing suits, not just slacks and a shirt...I wanted cash too...because I was going to put it towards the wedding...However...I dont think that everyone is going to give cash...coming from an Italian family...its customary that we give cash...but not all cultures do this...So im hoping they get the hint when I say im not registering...

Re: Engagement Party
Hmmm this is a hard one! I would register for a few things but dont put it on the invitation. I just think if you dont register....you will end up with a bunch of junk!
Or the honeymoon registry is a GREAT idea....I have one set up through honeymoon wishes. It works like cash! Once you close out the registry...the company sends you a check....NICE!
But people may think it is weird to buy you honeymoon stuff 2 years in advance. Hmmm. Very hard. I just think you can register for china and stemware and fancy utensils! That is something you can pick now. As far as storage...that could be a problem. Sorry I am not much of a help! I think if I were you just do a few things and maybe the china because that is pricey and you definitely want to try and get ALL of it!

Re: Engagement Party
we didn't register, and most people brought $$$$$; however, some brought gifts (like a vase that isn't my style at all), so I would suggest to register only for the people who are asking, but wouldn't write it on the invitation. Those who are asking are probably not comfortable with bringing cash, so they'll bring a gift anyway, so it'll be better if it's something that you actually like. Also, if you register at BB&B, then you can return the gifts for cash.

Re: Engagement Party
I would def register for a couple of things- things you really like, and are small so you won't have storage issues.
though most will give cash, you can't expect everyone to, some like to give gifts since they give cash at the wedding. i registered because i didn't want things i had to return or lie about liking.
