engagement party?

Original post by LaurenJosh

Is anyone else not having an engagement party? Everyone keeps asking me why I'm not having one. I never thought it was a must. My mom offered to give us one but I felt bad making her spend more money since she's paying for most of the wedding. I also didn't want people to feel they had to bring gifts for the engagement since they have to buy for the shower and the wedding too. Now, I'm second guessing myself since everyone is asking about it.

Re: engagement party?

FH and I had engagement party soon after the actual engagement. honestly, we didnt really think it was somethign you could delay planning. but now i realize otherwise. ours was pretty simple in the backroom of a restaurant. one of the reasons we had one was in hopes that ppl would stop asking when we were getting married. (at the time of the party we had not even started looking at RHs!). i just expected family and close friends to get together. i was actually surprised at how generous people were with the gifts!

its really up to you. one of my BMs is engaged and she is having her e-party 1 year in advance. so you could still do yours in may if you wanted one.

just keep it simple. save the good stuff for the wedding!

we had one.... it was aswome... so much fun.... we had just our fams no cousins cuz it would be too much just aunts uncles a few friends and the bridal party we still ended up with 63 people....

we had it at the american legion of malverne.... im glad we had it and would do it all over again,,, it was the 1st time we had both families together and everyone met each other....

we kept it within a nice budget also...

Re: engagement party?

We always have engagement parties in my family but fmil doesnt want to have one, she thinks there's no point... So we were thinking of having something with my family and if she wants to have her immediate family she can... Nothing big though, maybe something in the backyard or at a restaurant this summer... We'll see... I dont really care about getting gifts, it's just to celebrate

i feel bad having 1.. cuz guests will be giving us $ for the wedding and spending money for my shower.. i duno.having an eparty is asking for too much, esp with this economy.

That's how I feel also. Maybe I'll just have a little g2g with the immediate families and that's it.

We didn't have one because we wanted to save $. After we got engaged I arranged dinner and an open bar thing in the city for our friends (everyone paid for themselves) so we had a mini celebration. I also don't have e-pics and don't think im doing them.

I see what you mean but I also feel like if you want one have one and if people feel that is too much present wise they can just reply no or give a small gift, ya know?

My parents threw me a gorgeous engagement party on a yacht. I knew I didnt want to get married on a boat so they decided to throw me a party on it instead. I really appreciated the gesture and it was great having my fh and i introduced to our families as future husband and wife

We aren't having one. Not now anyway. We figured it out and we'd be invitng about 100 people.. and thats JUST immediate fam and the BP and their dates lol. FH and i would be paying for that too with a little help from my mom but it's too much $.

We might have something in the summer to save $ though. Maybe rent space in Eisenhower or something.

I am having one. Fh and my families (extended families - other than parents) haven't met and we really want them to meet before the wedding. We are having a casual backyard BBQ in June - so we figure it's a good excuse for a BBQ as both of our families love them!

we are doing the same thing!

We had one, but we were unsure about it at first. It actually ended up being a blast and a good experience for both sets of families.

we had one but we didnt want a huge party with a dj and etc...we just did a party with immediate family so our families could all meet and celebrate. I didnt want to do a 'mini wedding' and expect guests to give us gifts twice.

We are going back and forth about this too...but leaning more towards having it...I feel like I'll regret it if I don't..

we're having one, in 3 weeks from yesterday, at an italian restaurant in Deer Park, but its afternoon, so its not formal, and it will be just under 60 people. no dj, really just for everyone to come together, meet, and we're going to announce our bridal party, give them a small little memento for accepting, eat yummy food and mingle!

I had an engagement dinner with only the immediate family and friends. I've been engagement parties that had 200 people. They were like a mini weddings. Kind of silly if you ask me. With today's economy, i think we should focs all our $$$$ on the big day.

we did the same, ita

Re: engagement party?

My sister/MOH had this idea of throwing one. I was very skeptical about it because it's involves a lot of planning, money, having to entertain guests and guests feeling obligated to buy something. However, I actually had the e-GATHERING. It was something very small but we all had lots of fun, ate a lot of food (cooked all by MOH and mother), drank a lot, played taboo, and then went to our favorite local lounge at 3am. Overall, it was really nice. All my sister did was call it a gathering and told people not to buy anything. People did bring bottles of wine and liquor which we used but it was more relaxing for them. I have some pics in my album. She even did the invitations via e-vite.com.
