So we didn't have one yet. Is it too late to do an official engagement party??? We were thinking of something lower key like a 'meet the family' thing, but I'm not sure...

Re: engagement party
We didnt want to because our engagement is only 8 months. I felt weird expecting people to give me gifts/money for that and then 8 months later a wedding. And even if we said no gifts, you know people would bring it. I dont know. I just thought it was too much in a short time. Plus, the bridal shower
I wouldn't do it. JMO

Re: engagement party
So if an engagement party is out of the question now, should we do some sort of a 'meet the family' thing?? FMIL wants to combine us with FBIL and his FW... But they already had a celebratory dinner when we didn't have that...
I wanna celebrate being engaged!!! What does everyone think? How soon should we have done this?

Re: engagement party
i had an engagement party and no shower. you can do whatever you want. you should at least do joint family dinner if you want to blend the groups. if you want friends involved, then maybe ditch the shower and do the e party instead.
also, my engagement was in oct, e party in march, wedding in sept. i think 8 months before is fine.

Re: engagement party
I think it's a little late for an engagement party. I didn't have one either but since the wedding is about 5 months away and the shower is in another 2 months or so I don't want people to feel like they have to give us ANOTHER gift, and if it's called an engagement party then they will.
I suggest just doing something very informal. Since the weather is starting to become nicer maybe just inviting some of FH's fam over for a bbq would work.
If you were to have an engagement party I would think it would be next month the latest.

Re: engagement party
Alright, I guess that's what we will call it then...
Is it wrong of me to not want to combine it with FBIL??? We didn't get a dinner like they did with FMIL's family...
I know, I'm totally being a , but I've waited forever to be engaged. I'm 32 and we've been together for 5and a half years. I don't just want to be MARRIED all of a sudden, you know???

ITA!
Just have family over for dinner to meet (if they haven't already). My FMIL had our families over to meet for dinner. No gifts. Just so everyone who didn't meet, could meet.

Re: engagement party
my sister did one similar... she had what we called a Bridal Party Party... we invited immediate family and the Bridal Party so that everyone could get aquainted if they werent already

Re: engagement party
I think the rule is that an engagement party should be a year or more in advance of the wedding, to give people breaks between the wedding, shower, any other celebrations, etc. I think its useful as a guideline more than anything but I think if you do one maybe keep it just immediate family, like you said (I think its totally normal to want to do a meet the immediate family thing, if you've never done that)

Wait, you don't want to invite your FBIL???
I think that might cause problems.

No no, of course he's invited!!! I just don't know that I want to do a joint 'meet the family' (since I guess that's what we're doing) with him and his FW... Of course I want them there, I just want me and FH to be the guests of honor and not 'co-guests of honor' with another couple!

Re: engagement party
I agree. I think a 'meet the family' party is a great idea. It's also nice to have a reason to get together.

Re: engagement party
Our wedding is in December and our e-party is not until June. But I am not having a shower in ny, so its like an e-party and shower mixed.
I think you should do what you want! Your friends and family will go with what ever you decide!

Re: engagement party
We were engaged middle of January ... We are planning a bbq for June/July. It will be all the family and bridal party. The issue we're running into is my future hubby's family is BIG so its going to cost a bit more than we had anticipated. We got a catering menu for a grill guy to come and it would be about $25 per person minimum of 30 people. But that doesnt include all the beer, wine, soda, decor, favors and cake. Or do I even need to do favors? I just dont want someone to be stuck manning the grill all day you know???
