So I know that the big thing on Long Island is to have an engagement party and while I was excited about it at first, the thought of spending the money to have it sort of brought my excitement down.
Its not a necessary part of the whole wedding process right? I'm not a terrible person if I dont have one am I? hahaha.

Re: Engagement Party
I'm not having one. My parents are really against it and think that it is asking too much from your friends/family. I found that people who want to celebrate your engagement with you will, and those who want to give you an engagement present will...regardless if you have a party or not.
If the idea of a party seems daunting to you -- don't have one. I don't think it is 'weird' or anything. But then again, that's probably because I'm not having one.

Re: Engagement Party
Def. dont need one - I wasn't really all about the idea. FH's family took the lead and did all the planning and paid for it which was great.
I had a BLAST it was so much fun but it's not needed.

Re: Engagement Party
we opted not to have one. Instead we had a small brunch with our immediate families and those non-fam members that are in the wedding party. It was nice to do something to kick off the planning, but I don't think e-parties are necessary at all.

Re: Engagement Party
Im not having one. My parents told me at the beginning I was not having one. My mom didn't wait it to look like we were begging for gifts. She was like were not having an engagement party, then a bridal shower and then the wedding. She thought it was too much. So we just skipped it. Your not a terrible person for not having one.

Re: Engagement Party
it's absolutely not necessary at all. Actually, I am going to my first actual E-Party ever this coming Saturday.
We didn't have one. We were actually given a surprise e-party/birthday party for me at a friend's bar but it wasn't like a catered affair or anything - just our close friends and us getting wasted and dancing like fools for the night.

Re: Engagement Party
I didn't want to throw a huge party but I wanted to celebrate our engagement with our friends and family. So what we did instead was invite our bridal party and family to dinner when we visited NY. We somehow ended up with gifts lol. Everyone was all like what do you want as a gift. Finally I told everyone listen if u want to give us a gift that's fine but you are not obligated to. We just wanted to have a good time.

Re: Engagement Party
It's definetly not necessary. Honestly, I didn't want one because I think it's asking a lot from people but FH's family insisted. If my FIL's didn't throw it for us we wouldn't have had one.

Re: Engagement Party
definitely not necessary. My mom is having one only because a lot of our elderly relatives have never met FH and will not come to the wedding. But we are just inviting them over for a bbq on the 4th of July, so its kind of a combination party. But very low key and very cheap

Re: Engagement Party
I didn't have one.
We just got the parents together and went out to eat. My mom got us a cake.
We still got engagement cards/gifts but wasn't expecting them. So no biggie if you don't have one. Save the money

Re: Engagement Party
We are having one but we are not paying for it. My mom wants to give us a party. We are only inviting close family and the bridal party. Its just a backyard BBQ nothing crazy.

Re: Engagement Party
We had one but only because both of our parents paid for it I think they spent like 4,000 on it but we got 8,000 and some gifts which was crazy
