Engagement party hall help

My mom is suppose to be throwing us the engagement party. The date is April 26, but she hasnt done a thing towards the engagement party. She hasnt looked at halls, prices, invitations or anything and its really starting to annoy and upset me. I feel like April is just around the corner and there isnt a thing done.

FI and I are also paying for our entire wedding so the engagement party we are really looking forward to especially since my parents are throwing it for us. So FI and I are taking matters into our own hands and figure we'll do all the hard part and just have her give us the money. As much as i was hoping to avoid doing all this extra work its become if we dont do it she wont. so by us doing all the work all she has to do is just hand us the money.

Does anyone have any suggestions on small halls either in Nassau or Queens (prefably Queens since that is where we are from and all our friends and family that will be invited will be coming from) that is very reasonable. We're looking at 100 - 125 people.

Thanks so much...

Ask for Bob (he's a little weird but sweet). Ask for the room downstairs. It's about $650.

Caffe on the Green and Verdi's. There are two Verdi's, the one i'm talking about is in Queens in or near Douglaston. I'm don't really like the one in Westbury.

Good luck! I'm sorry you have to take care of this. But try to cheer up things will be great!

We are having our engagement party at Chateau Briand. We are having about 100 people too so you might want to check it out.

Leonard's of Great Neck has many rooms of different sizes - I am sure they could accomadate a party of your size. I just went to a party there, about 80-90 people. The room was beautiful and it is very convenient to Queens (on Northern Blvd.)

Re: Engagement party hall help

What do you mean by reasonable? Do you need liquor or just beer, wine and soda? I have been on a mission the last couple of weeks looking for a place for our eparty and I can tell you the prices vary depending on what your needs are. Do you want buffet style or sit down dinner?
If you would like to hold it at a reception hall the average price is about $40-$50pp including tax and gratuity. This does not include a cocktail hour. So the party will be for 4 hours.

I have also looked into VFW's however, some cannot accomodate the amount of guests we will have. We are also having about 100+ people. The average cost for these is about $500-$700. It depends what you need to book with them too: bar tender, use their liquor...
If you want more details forum mail me. Wanda

I like all the suggestions already posted- Cafe on the Green would be my favorite.

Have you asked your Mom about this? I mean, maybe she has been planning behind your back (so at least something would be a surprise?) and you and your FI don't know about it? Or, if not, maybe you should just ask her and let her know that if she doesn't do it soon, you will take matters into your own hands. Ya know, Mom is Mom- she may be hurt if you felt you couldn't rely on her to do this for you guys. (Just playing devils advocate)

Re: Engagement party hall help

I've definatly spoken to her and to my father about this. She said she has called people and has looked into stuff and my dad said she hasnt done anything (my mom doesnt drive so she needs my dad to drive her to places)

She is the one who said was going to throw us the engagement party. I wanted the party to be in December and have a holiday theme to it. My mother wanted after the holidays. After Easter Holiday. That seemed like an aweful long time away but I compramised.

She has been the one who has been saying she is going to throw us an engagement party and for us to get our list together and she'll handle everything. Then each time I ask her about anything wedding related its like she doesnt care. Mind you FI and I are paying for the entire wedding and when I make a comment like I got quoted x amount of dollars for a DJ she tells me oh thats a good price. It blew my mind. I am sorry but I thought 2000 for a DJ was a bit much. And here she is complaining how expensive an engagement party is. Yea try paying for the wedding I feel like saying to her.

It always becomes a fight with her when it involves anything with the wedding. She wants what she wants and if someone else is paying for it then she doesnt care what the cost is, but if she has to pay for it then it becomes an issue. So FI and I just figure we'll do all the work as usual and then get the money from my parents this way she has to do nothing, just like she originally wanted. Oh I forgot to mention yea she just wants to be the mother of the bride and have people cater to her because she is mother of the bride. All of a sudden a ring is on my finger and she decides to turn into a snobby witch.
